In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Qarib: No, I swear by this country (Mecca),
Sarwar: I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca)
Shakir: Nay! I swear by this city
Pickthall: Nay, I swear by this city -
Yusufali: I do call to witness this City;-
Qarib: and you are a lodger in this country.
Sarwar: in which you are now living
Shakir: And you shall be made free from obligation in this city--
Pickthall: And thou art an indweller of this city -
Yusufali: And thou art a freeman of this City;-
Qarib: And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered,
Sarwar: or by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael)
Shakir: And the begetter and whom he begot
Pickthall: And the begetter and that which he begat,
Yusufali: And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;-
Qarib: We created the human in fatigue.
Sarwar: that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship.
Shakir: Certainly We have created man to be in distress
Pickthall: We verily have created man in an atmosphere:
Yusufali: Verily We have created man into toil and struggle.
Qarib: Does he think that none has power over him!
Sarwar: Does He think that no one will ever have control over him?
Shakir: Does he think that no one has power over him?
Pickthall: Thinketh he that none hath power over him?
Yusufali: Thinketh he, that none hath power over him?
Qarib: He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth. '
Sarwar: (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)".
Shakir: He shall say: I have wasted much wealth
Pickthall: And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth:
Yusufali: He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance!
Qarib: Does he think that none has observed him?
Sarwar: Does he think that no one has seen him?
Shakir: Does he think that no one sees him?
Pickthall: Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?
Yusufali: Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?
Qarib: Have We not given him two eyes,
Sarwar: Have We not given him two eyes,
Shakir: Have We not given him two eyes,
Pickthall: Did We not assign unto him two eyes
Yusufali: Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?-
Qarib: a tongue, and two lips,
Sarwar: a tongue, and two lips?
Shakir: And a tongue and two lips,
Pickthall: And a tongue and two lips,
Yusufali: And a tongue, and a pair of lips?-
Qarib: and guided him on the two paths (of good and evil)?
Sarwar: Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil?
Shakir: And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways?
Pickthall: And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways?
Yusufali: And shown him the two highways?
