بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
وَالنَّازِعَاتِ غَرْقًا
﴿۱﴾
Qarib: By the pluckers (the angels of death), violently plucking (the souls of the unbelievers),
Sarwar: By the angels who violently tear-out the souls of the disbelievers from their bodies, Shakir: I swear by the angels who violently pull out the souls of the wicked, Pickthall: By those who drag forth to destruction, Yusufali: By the (angels) who tear out (the souls of the wicked) with violence;
وَالنَّاشِطَاتِ نَشْطًا
﴿۲﴾
Qarib: by the drawers (the angels of death), gently drawing (the souls of the believers),
Sarwar: by the angels who gently release the souls of the believers, Shakir: And by those who gently draw out the souls of the blessed, Pickthall: By the meteors rushing, Yusufali: By those who gently draw out (the souls of the blessed);
وَالسَّابِحَاتِ سَبْحًا
﴿۳﴾
Qarib: by the swimmers (angels) swimming gently
Sarwar: by the angels who float (in the heavens by the will of God), Shakir: And by those who float in space, Pickthall: By the lone stars floating, Yusufali: And by those who glide along (on errands of mercy),
فَالسَّابِقَاتِ سَبْقًا
﴿۴﴾
Qarib: and the outstrippers (angels), outstripping,
Sarwar: by the angels who hasten along Shakir: Then those who are foremost going ahead, Pickthall: By the angels hastening, Yusufali: Then press forward as in a race,
فَالْمُدَبِّرَاتِ أَمْرًا
﴿۵﴾
Qarib: by the managers (angels) affair.
Sarwar: and by the angels who regulate the affairs, (you will certainly be resurrected). Shakir: Then those who regulate the affair Pickthall: And those who govern the event, Yusufali: Then arrange to do (the Commands of their Lord),
يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ الرَّاجِفَةُ
﴿۶﴾
Qarib: On the Day, the shiverer shivers
Sarwar: On the day when the first trumpet sound blasts Shakir: The day on which the quaking one shall quake, Pickthall: On the day when the first trump resoundeth. Yusufali: One Day everything that can be in commotion will be in violent commotion,
تَتْبَعُهَا الرَّادِفَةُ
﴿۷﴾
Qarib: followed by the succeeding,
Sarwar: and will be followed by the second one, Shakir: What must happen afterwards shall follow it Pickthall: And the second followeth it, Yusufali: Followed by oft-repeated (commotions):
قُلُوبٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاجِفَةٌ
﴿۸﴾
Qarib: hearts will throb on that Day
Sarwar: hearts will undergo terrible trembling, Shakir: Hearts on that day shall palpitate, Pickthall: On that day hearts beat painfully Yusufali: Hearts that Day will be in agitation;
أَبْصَارُهَا خَاشِعَةٌ
﴿۹﴾
Qarib: and their eyes will be humbled.
Sarwar: and eyes will be humbly cast down. Shakir: Their eyes cast down Pickthall: While eyes are downcast Yusufali: Cast down will be (their owners') eyes.
يَقُولُونَ أَإِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ
﴿۱۰﴾
Qarib: They say: 'What, are we being restored as we were before,
Sarwar: (The disbelievers) say, "Shall we be brought back to life again Shakir: They say: Shall we indeed be restored to (our) first state? Pickthall: (Now) they are saying: Shall we really be restored to our first state Yusufali: They say (now): "What! shall we indeed be returned to (our) former state?
أَإِذَا كُنَّا عِظَامًا نَخِرَةً
﴿۱۱﴾
Qarib: even after we are fragmented bones? '
Sarwar: after we have become bones and dust?" Shakir: What! when we are rotten bones? Pickthall: Even after we are crumbled bones? Yusufali: "What! - when we shall have become rotten bones?"
قَالُوا تِلْكَ إِذًا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٌ
﴿۱۲﴾
Qarib: They will say: 'Then we are returned lost! '
Sarwar: They have said, "Such a resurrection will certainly be a great loss". Shakir: They said: That then would be a return occasioning loss Pickthall: They say: Then that would be a vain proceeding. Yusufali: They say: "It would, in that case, be a return with loss!"
فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجْرَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ
﴿۱۳﴾
Qarib: But it will be only a single blow,
Sarwar: However, it will only take a single blast Shakir: But it shall be only a single cry, Pickthall: Surely it will need but one shout, Yusufali: But verily, it will be but a single (Compelling) Cry,
فَإِذَا هُمْ بِالسَّاهِرَةِ
﴿۱۴﴾
Qarib: and they will be upon the surface of the earth (alive).
Sarwar: to bring them out of their graves and back to life on the earth's surface. Shakir: When lo! they shall be wakeful Pickthall: And lo! they will be awakened. Yusufali: When, behold, they will be in the (full) awakening (to Judgment).
هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَى
﴿۱۵﴾
Qarib: Have you received the story of Moses?
Sarwar: (Muhammad), have you heard the story of Moses Shakir: Has not there come to you the story of Musa? Pickthall: Hath there come unto thee the history of Moses? Yusufali: Has the story of Moses reached thee?
إِذْ نَادَاهُ رَبُّهُ بِالْوَادِ الْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى
﴿۱۶﴾
Qarib: His Lord called to him in the Sacred Valley of Towa,
Sarwar: when his Lord called him in the holy valley of Tuwa, Shakir: When his Lord called upon him in the holy valley, twice, Pickthall: How his Lord called him in the holy vale of Tuwa, Yusufali: Behold, thy Lord did call to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa:-
اذْهَبْ إِلَى فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُ طَغَى
﴿۱۷﴾
Qarib: saying 'Go to Pharaoh, he has become exceedingly insolent,
Sarwar: saying, "Go to the Pharaoh. He has transgressed beyond all bounds. Shakir: Go to Firon, surely he has become inordinate Pickthall: (Saying:) Go thou unto Pharaoh - Lo! he hath rebelled - Yusufali: "Go thou to Pharaoh for he has indeed transgressed all bounds:
فَقُلْ هَلْ لَكَ إِلَى أَنْ تَزَكَّى
﴿۱۸﴾
Qarib: and say: "Will you purify yourself,
Sarwar: And say to him, "Would you like to reform yourself? Shakir: Then say: Have you (a desire) to purify yourself: Pickthall: And say (unto him): Hast thou (will) to grow (in grace)? Yusufali: "And say to him, 'Wouldst thou that thou shouldst be purified (from sin)?-
وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَى رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَى
﴿۱۹﴾
Qarib: that I might guide you to your Lord, so that you fear (Him)."
Sarwar: I shall guide you to your Lord so that you may perhaps have fear of Him". Shakir: And I will guide you to your Lord so that you should fear Pickthall: Then I will guide thee to thy Lord and thou shalt fear (Him). Yusufali: "'And that I guide thee to thy Lord, so thou shouldst fear Him?'"
فَأَرَاهُ الْآيَةَ الْكُبْرَى
﴿۲۰﴾
Qarib: He showed him the mighty sign,
Sarwar: Moses showed him the great miracle Shakir: So he showed him the mighty sign Pickthall: And he showed him the tremendous token. Yusufali: Then did (Moses) show him the Great Sign.
فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَى
﴿۲۱﴾
Qarib: but he belied and disobeyed,
Sarwar: but the Pharaoh rejected it and disobeyed (Moses). Shakir: But he rejected (the truth) and disobeyed Pickthall: But he denied and disobeyed, Yusufali: But (Pharaoh) rejected it and disobeyed (guidance);
ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ يَسْعَى
﴿۲۲﴾
Qarib: and hastily turned away,
Sarwar: Then he turned away in a hurry, Shakir: Then he went back hastily Pickthall: Then turned he away in haste, Yusufali: Further, he turned his back, striving hard (against Allah).
فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَى
﴿۲۳﴾
Qarib: then, he gathered, proclaimed, then said:
Sarwar: and gathered his people together Shakir: Then he gathered (men) and called out Pickthall: Then gathered he and summoned Yusufali: Then he collected (his men) and made a proclamation,
فَقَالَ أَنَا رَبُّكُمُ الْأَعْلَى
﴿۲۴﴾
Qarib: 'I am your lord, the most high! '
Sarwar: saying, "I am your supreme lord". Shakir: Then he said: I am your lord, the most high Pickthall: And proclaimed: "I (Pharaoh) am your Lord the Highest." Yusufali: Saying, "I am your Lord, Most High".
فَأَخَذَهُ اللَّهُ نَكَالَ الْآخِرَةِ وَالْأُولَى
﴿۲۵﴾
Qarib: So Allah seized him with the punishment of the Everlasting Life, and of this world.
Sarwar: So God struck him with the torment of this life and the life hereafter. Shakir: So Allah seized him with the punishment of the hereafter and the former life Pickthall: So Allah seized him (and made him) an example for the after (life) and for the former. Yusufali: But Allah did punish him, (and made an) example of him, - in the Hereafter, as in this life.
إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِمَنْ يَخْشَى
﴿۲۶﴾
Qarib: Surely, in this there is a lesson for he that fears!
Sarwar: In this there is a lesson for those who have fear of God. Shakir: Most surely there is in this a lesson to him who fears Pickthall: Lo! herein is indeed a lesson for him who feareth. Yusufali: Verily in this is an instructive warning for whosoever feareth (Allah).
أَأَنْتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ السَّمَاءُ بَنَاهَا
﴿۲۷﴾
Qarib: What, are you harder to create than the heaven which He has built?
Sarwar: (People), is your creation harder for God than that of the heavens, which He created, raised and established Shakir: Are you the harder to create or the heaven? He made it Pickthall: Are ye the harder to create, or is the heaven that He built? Yusufali: What! Are ye the more difficult to create or the heaven (above)? (Allah) hath constructed it:
رَفَعَ سَمْكَهَا فَسَوَّاهَا
﴿۲۸﴾
Qarib: He raised it high and leveled it,
Sarwar: high above? Shakir: He raised high its height, then put it into a right good state Pickthall: He raised the height thereof and ordered it; Yusufali: On high hath He raised its canopy, and He hath given it order and perfection.
وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَاهَا
﴿۲۹﴾
Qarib: and darkened its night and brought forth its morning.
Sarwar: He has made its nights dark and its days bright. Shakir: And He made dark its night and brought out its light Pickthall: And He made dark the night thereof, and He brought forth the morn thereof. Yusufali: Its night doth He endow with darkness, and its splendour doth He bring out (with light).
وَالْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ دَحَاهَا
﴿۳۰﴾
Qarib: And the earth He extended after that;
Sarwar: After this, He spread out the earth, Shakir: And the earth, He expanded it after that Pickthall: And after that He spread the earth, Yusufali: And the earth, moreover, hath He extended (to a wide expanse);
أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَاءَهَا وَمَرْعَاهَا
﴿۳۱﴾
Qarib: and then brought from it its water and pastures.
Sarwar: produced water and grass therefrom, Shakir: He brought forth from it its water and its pasturage Pickthall: And produced therefrom the water thereof and the pasture thereof, Yusufali: He draweth out therefrom its moisture and its pasture;
وَالْجِبَالَ أَرْسَاهَا
﴿۳۲﴾
Qarib: And the mountains He set firm
Sarwar: then set-up firmly the mountains. Shakir: And the mountains, He made them firm, Pickthall: And He made fast the hills, Yusufali: And the mountains hath He firmly fixed;-
مَتَاعًا لَكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ
﴿۳۳﴾
Qarib: an enjoyment for you and your herds.
Sarwar: All this was done as a means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. Shakir: A provision for you and for your cattle Pickthall: A provision for you and for your cattle. Yusufali: For use and convenience to you and your cattle.
فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الطَّامَّةُ الْكُبْرَى
﴿۳۴﴾
Qarib: But when the Great Catastrophe comes,
Sarwar: On the day when the great calamity comes, Shakir: But when the great predominating calamity comes; Pickthall: But when the great disaster cometh, Yusufali: Therefore, when there comes the great, overwhelming (Event),-
يَوْمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنْسَانُ مَا سَعَى
﴿۳۵﴾
Qarib: the Day when the human will remember what he has worked for,
Sarwar: the human being will recall whatever he has done. Shakir: The day on which man shall recollect what he strove after, Pickthall: The day when man will call to mind his (whole) endeavour, Yusufali: The Day when man shall remember (all) that he strove for,
وَبُرِّزَتِ الْجَحِيمُ لِمَنْ يَرَى
﴿۳۶﴾
Qarib: and when Hell is advanced for whoever sees,
Sarwar: Hell fire will become visible for those who would see it. Shakir: And the hell shall be made manifest to him who sees Pickthall: And hell will stand forth visible to him who seeth, Yusufali: And Hell-Fire shall be placed in full view for (all) to see,-
فَأَمَّا مَنْ طَغَى
﴿۳۷﴾
Qarib: then as for whosoever was insolent
Sarwar: Those who have rebelled Shakir: Then as for him who is inordinate, Pickthall: Then, as for him who rebelled Yusufali: Then, for such as had transgressed all bounds,
وَآثَرَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا
﴿۳۸﴾
Qarib: preferring the present life,
Sarwar: and preferred the worldly life, Shakir: And prefers the life of this world, Pickthall: And chose the life of the world, Yusufali: And had preferred the life of this world,
فَإِنَّ الْجَحِيمَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَى
﴿۳۹﴾
Qarib: surely, Hell will be their refuge.
Sarwar: hell will be their dwelling. Shakir: Then surely the hell, that is the abode Pickthall: Lo! hell will be his home. Yusufali: The Abode will be Hell-Fire;
وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَى
﴿۴۰﴾
Qarib: But, whosoever feared the standing before his Lord and prevented the self from desires,
Sarwar: However, those who had feared their Lord and restrained their souls from acting according to its desires. Shakir: And as for him who fears to stand in the presence of his Lord and forbids the soul from low desires, Pickthall: But as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his soul from lust, Yusufali: And for such as had entertained the fear of standing before their Lord's (tribunal) and had restrained (their) soul from lower desires,
فَإِنَّ الْجَنَّةَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَى
﴿۴۱﴾
Qarib: indeed, their refuge shall be Paradise.
Sarwar: Paradise will be the dwelling. Shakir: Then surely the garden-- that is the abode Pickthall: Lo! the Garden will be his home. Yusufali: Their abode will be the Garden.
يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ السَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَاهَا
﴿۴۲﴾
Qarib: They will question you about the Hour: 'When shall it be? '
Sarwar: (Muhammad), they ask you, "When will the Hour of Doom come?" Shakir: They ask you about the hour, when it will come Pickthall: They ask thee of the Hour: when will it come to port? Yusufali: They ask thee about the Hour,-'When will be its appointed time?
فِيمَ أَنْتَ مِنْ ذِكْرَاهَا
﴿۴۳﴾
Qarib: But how are you to know?
Sarwar: (Muhammad), you do not know (when and how) it will come. Shakir: About what! You are one to remind of it Pickthall: Why (ask they)? What hast thou to tell thereof? Yusufali: Wherein art thou (concerned) with the declaration thereof?
إِلَى رَبِّكَ مُنْتَهَاهَا
﴿۴۴﴾
Qarib: Its final end is for your Lord.
Sarwar: This matter is in the hands of your Lord. Shakir: To your Lord is the goal of it Pickthall: Unto thy Lord belongeth (knowledge of) the term thereof. Yusufali: With thy Lord in the Limit fixed therefor.
إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مُنْذِرُ مَنْ يَخْشَاهَا
﴿۴۵﴾
Qarib: You are but a warner for those who fear it.
Sarwar: You are only a warner for those who fear such a day. Shakir: You are only a warner to him who would fear it Pickthall: Thou art but a warner unto him who feareth it. Yusufali: Thou art but a Warner for such as fear it.
كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَهَا لَمْ يَلْبَثُوا إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوْ ضُحَاهَا
﴿۴۶﴾
Qarib: On the Day when they behold it, it will be as if they had lingered but an evening, or, a morning.
Sarwar: On the day when they see it, it will seem to them as though they had only lived in the world for a morning and an afternoon. Shakir: On the day that they see it, it will be as though they had not tarried but the latter part of a day or the early part of it Pickthall: On the day when they behold it, it will be as if they had but tarried for an evening or the morn thereof. Yusufali: The Day they see it, (It will be) as if they had tarried but a single evening, or (at most till) the following morn! |
