بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
لَا أُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ
﴿۱﴾
Qarib: No! I swear by the Day of Resurrection,
Sarwar: I swear by the Day of Resurrection Shakir: Nay! I swear by the day of resurrection Pickthall: Nay, I swear by the Day of Resurrection; Yusufali: I do call to witness the Resurrection Day;
وَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالنَّفْسِ اللَّوَّامَةِ
﴿۲﴾
Qarib: No! I swear by the reproachful soul!
Sarwar: and by the self accusing soul (that you will certainly be resurrected). Shakir: Nay! I swear by the self-accusing soul Pickthall: Nay, I swear by the accusing soul (that this Scripture is true). Yusufali: And I do call to witness the self-reproaching spirit: (Eschew Evil).
أَيَحْسَبُ الْإِنْسَانُ أَلَّنْ نَجْمَعَ عِظَامَهُ
﴿۳﴾
Qarib: What, does the human think We shall never gather his bones?
Sarwar: Do men think that We shall never be able to assemble their bones? Shakir: Does man think that We shall not gather his bones? Pickthall: Thinketh man that We shall not assemble his bones? Yusufali: Does man think that We cannot assemble his bones?
بَلَى قَادِرِينَ عَلَى أَنْ نُسَوِّيَ بَنَانَهُ
﴿۴﴾
Qarib: Indeed yes, We are able to shape his fingerstips yet again!
Sarwar: We certainly have the power to restore them even the very tips of their finger. Shakir: Yea! We are able to make complete his very fingertips Pickthall: Yea, verily. We are Able to restore his very fingers! Yusufali: Nay, We are able to put together in perfect order the very tips of his fingers.
بَلْ يُرِيدُ الْإِنْسَانُ لِيَفْجُرَ أَمَامَهُ
﴿۵﴾
Qarib: Rather, the human desires to continue in his immorality,
Sarwar: In fact, people want to have eternal life in this world. Shakir: Nay! man desires to give the lie to what is before him Pickthall: But man would fain deny what is before him. Yusufali: But man wishes to do wrong (even) in the time in front of him.
يَسْأَلُ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ
﴿۶﴾
Qarib: 'When will the Day of Resurrection be? ' he asks,
Sarwar: He asks, "When will be the Day of Judgment?" Shakir: He asks: When is the day of resurrection? Pickthall: He asketh: When will be this Day of Resurrection? Yusufali: He questions: "When is the Day of Resurrection?"
فَإِذَا بَرِقَ الْبَصَرُ
﴿۷﴾
Qarib: but when the sight is dazed
Sarwar: When the eye is bewildered, Shakir: So when the sight becomes dazed, Pickthall: But when sight is confounded Yusufali: At length, when the sight is dazed,
وَخَسَفَ الْقَمَرُ
﴿۸﴾
Qarib: and the moon eclipsed,
Sarwar: the moon eclipsed. Shakir: And the moon becomes dark, Pickthall: And the moon is eclipsed Yusufali: And the moon is buried in darkness.
وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ
﴿۹﴾
Qarib: when the sun and moon are gathered together
Sarwar: and the sun and the moon are brought together, Shakir: And the sun and the moon are brought together, Pickthall: And sun and moon are united, Yusufali: And the sun and moon are joined together,-
يَقُولُ الْإِنْسَانُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ الْمَفَرُّ
﴿۱۰﴾
Qarib: on that Day the human will ask: 'To (which place) shall I flee? '
Sarwar: people will say, "Is there anywhere to run away?" Shakir: Man shall say on that day: Whither to fly to? Pickthall: On that day man will cry: Whither to flee! Yusufali: That Day will Man say: "Where is the refuge?"
كَلَّا لَا وَزَرَ
﴿۱۱﴾
Qarib: No, there shall be no (place of) refuge.
Sarwar: Certainly not! There will be no place of refuge. Shakir: By no means! there shall be no place of refuge! Pickthall: Alas! No refuge! Yusufali: By no means! No place of safety!
إِلَى رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ الْمُسْتَقَرُّ
﴿۱۲﴾
Qarib: For on that Day the refuge shall be to your Lord.
Sarwar: The only place of refuge will be with God. Shakir: With your Lord alone shall on that day be the place of rest Pickthall: Unto thy Lord is the recourse that day. Yusufali: Before thy Lord (alone), that Day will be the place of rest.
يُنَبَّأُ الْإِنْسَانُ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَأَخَّرَ
﴿۱۳﴾
Qarib: On that Day the human shall be informed of his former and latter deeds.
Sarwar: On that day, people will be informed of all that they had done and all that they were supposed to do. Shakir: Man shall on that day be informed of what he sent before and (what he) put off Pickthall: On that day man is told the tale of that which he hath sent before and left behind. Yusufali: That Day will Man be told (all) that he put forward, and all that he put back.
بَلِ الْإِنْسَانُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ بَصِيرَةٌ
﴿۱۴﴾
Qarib: He shall be a clear proof against himself,
Sarwar: In fact, people are well-aware of their own soul Shakir: Nay! man is evidence against himself, Pickthall: Oh, but man is a telling witness against himself, Yusufali: Nay, man will be evidence against himself,
وَلَوْ أَلْقَى مَعَاذِيرَهُ
﴿۱۵﴾
Qarib: even though he offers his excuses.
Sarwar: even though they make excuses. Shakir: Though he puts forth his excuses Pickthall: Although he tender his excuses. Yusufali: Even though he were to put up his excuses.
لَا تُحَرِّكْ بِهِ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهِ
﴿۱۶﴾
Qarib: Do not move your tongue with it (the Revelation) to hasten it.
Sarwar: (Muhammad), do not move your tongue too quickly to recite the Quran. Shakir: Do not move your tongue with it to make haste with it, Pickthall: Stir not thy tongue herewith to hasten it. Yusufali: Move not thy tongue concerning the (Qur'an) to make haste therewith.
إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهُ وَقُرْآنَهُ
﴿۱۷﴾
Qarib: It's gathering and reciting is upon Us.
Sarwar: We shall be responsible for its collection and its recitation. Shakir: Surely on Us (devolves) the collecting of it and the reciting of it Pickthall: Lo! upon Us (resteth) the putting together thereof and the reading thereof. Yusufali: It is for Us to collect it and to promulgate it:
فَإِذَا قَرَأْنَاهُ فَاتَّبِعْ قُرْآنَهُ
﴿۱۸﴾
Qarib: When We recite it, follow its recitation.
Sarwar: When We recite it, follow its recitation (by Us). Shakir: Therefore when We have recited it, follow its recitation Pickthall: And when We read it, follow thou the reading; Yusufali: But when We have promulgated it, follow thou its recital (as promulgated):
ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهُ
﴿۱۹﴾
Qarib: It's explanation is upon Us.
Sarwar: We shall be responsible for its explanation. Shakir: Again on Us (devolves) the explaining of it Pickthall: Then lo! upon Us (resteth) the explanation thereof. Yusufali: Nay more, it is for Us to explain it (and make it clear):
كَلَّا بَلْ تُحِبُّونَ الْعَاجِلَةَ
﴿۲۰﴾
Qarib: Yet you love this hasty world
Sarwar: Human beings certainly do not want to pay much attention to the Quran. In fact, they love the worldly life Shakir: Nay! But you love the present life, Pickthall: Nay, but ye do love the fleeting Now Yusufali: Nay, (ye men!) but ye love the fleeting life,
وَتَذَرُونَ الْآخِرَةَ
﴿۲۱﴾
Qarib: and are heedless of the Everlasting Life.
Sarwar: and neglect the life to come. Shakir: And neglect the hereafter Pickthall: And neglect the Hereafter. Yusufali: And leave alone the Hereafter.
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَاضِرَةٌ
﴿۲۲﴾
Qarib: On that Day there shall be radiant faces,
Sarwar: On the Day of Judgment some faces will be bright, Shakir: (Some) faces on that day shall be bright, Pickthall: That day will faces be resplendent, Yusufali: Some faces, that Day, will beam (in brightness and beauty);-
إِلَى رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ
﴿۲۳﴾
Qarib: gazing towards their Lord.
Sarwar: and look forward to receiving mercy from their Lord. Shakir: Looking to their Lord Pickthall: Looking toward their Lord; Yusufali: Looking towards their Lord;
وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ بَاسِرَةٌ
﴿۲۴﴾
Qarib: And on that Day there shall be scowling faces,
Sarwar: Others will be despondent, Shakir: And (other) faces on that day shall be gloomy, Pickthall: And that day will other faces be despondent, Yusufali: And some faces, that Day, will be sad and dismal,
تَظُنُّ أَنْ يُفْعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٌ
﴿۲۵﴾
Qarib: so they might think the Calamity had been inflicted upon them.
Sarwar: certain of facing a great calamity. Shakir: Knowing that there will be made to befall them some great calamity Pickthall: Thou wilt know that some great disaster is about to fall on them. Yusufali: In the thought that some back-breaking calamity was about to be inflicted on them;
كَلَّا إِذَا بَلَغَتِ التَّرَاقِيَ
﴿۲۶﴾
Qarib: But, when (the soul) reaches the collar bone
Sarwar: Some people, certainly, do not believe in it, but when a person's soul reaches up to his throat Shakir: Nay! When it comes up to the throat, Pickthall: Nay, but when the life cometh up to the throat Yusufali: Yea, when (the soul) reaches to the collar-bone (in its exit),
وَقِيلَ مَنْ رَاقٍ
﴿۲۷﴾
Qarib: and it is said: 'Who is a healing chanter? '
Sarwar: and the angels say, "Who will take away his soul, Shakir: And it is said: Who will be a magician? Pickthall: And men say: Where is the wizard (who can save him now)? Yusufali: And there will be a cry, "Who is a magician (to restore him)?"
وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ الْفِرَاقُ
﴿۲۸﴾
Qarib: and when he thinks it is the time of departure
Sarwar: (the angels of mercy or the angels of wrath,)" then, he will realize that it is time to leave this world. Shakir: And he is sure that it is the (hour of) parting Pickthall: And he knoweth that it is the parting; Yusufali: And he will conclude that it was (the Time) of Parting;
وَالْتَفَّتِ السَّاقُ بِالسَّاقِ
﴿۲۹﴾
Qarib: and when leg is intertwined with leg,
Sarwar: When legs are twisted around each other, Shakir: And affliction is combined with affliction; Pickthall: And agony is heaped on agony; Yusufali: And one leg will be joined with another:
إِلَى رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ الْمَسَاقُ
﴿۳۰﴾
Qarib: upon that Day the driving shall be to your Lord.
Sarwar: that will be the time to be driven to one's Lord. Shakir: To your Lord on that day shall be the driving Pickthall: Unto thy Lord that day will be the driving. Yusufali: That Day the Drive will be (all) to thy Lord!
فَلَا صَدَّقَ وَلَا صَلَّى
﴿۳۱﴾
Qarib: Because, he neither believed nor prayed;
Sarwar: The human being does not want to believe the Truth, nor does he want to pray. Shakir: So he did not accept the truth, nor did he pray, Pickthall: For he neither trusted, nor prayed. Yusufali: So he gave nothing in charity, nor did he pray!-
وَلَكِنْ كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّى
﴿۳۲﴾
Qarib: he belied the truth and turned away;
Sarwar: He rejects the faith, turns away Shakir: But called the truth a lie and turned back, Pickthall: But he denied and flouted. Yusufali: But on the contrary, he rejected Truth and turned away!
ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ يَتَمَطَّى
﴿۳۳﴾
Qarib: then went arrogantly to his household.
Sarwar: and haughtily goes to his people. Shakir: Then he went to his followers, walking away in haughtiness Pickthall: Then went he to his folk with glee. Yusufali: Then did he stalk to his family in full conceit!
أَوْلَى لَكَ فَأَوْلَى
﴿۳۴﴾
Qarib: Near to you and nearer,
Sarwar: Woe to you! Shakir: Nearer to you (is destruction) and nearer, Pickthall: Nearer unto thee and nearer, Yusufali: Woe to thee, (O men!), yea, woe!
ثُمَّ أَوْلَى لَكَ فَأَوْلَى
﴿۳۵﴾
Qarib: then nearer to you and nearer!
Sarwar: Woe to you! Shakir: Again (consider how) nearer to you and nearer Pickthall: Again nearer unto thee and nearer (is the doom). Yusufali: Again, Woe to thee, (O men!), yea, woe!
أَيَحْسَبُ الْإِنْسَانُ أَنْ يُتْرَكَ سُدًى
﴿۳۶﴾
Qarib: Does the human think he will be left to roam at will?
Sarwar: For you, the human being of such behavior, will certainly deserve it. Shakir: Does man think that he is to be left to wander without an aim? Pickthall: Thinketh man that he is to be left aimless? Yusufali: Does man think that he will be left uncontrolled, (without purpose)?
أَلَمْ يَكُ نُطْفَةً مِنْ مَنِيٍّ يُمْنَى
﴿۳۷﴾
Qarib: What, was he not an ejaculated drop (of sperm)?
Sarwar: Does the human being think that he will be left uncontrolled? Shakir: Was he not a small seed in the seminal elements, Pickthall: Was he not a drop of fluid which gushed forth? Yusufali: Was he not a drop of sperm emitted (in lowly form)?
ثُمَّ كَانَ عَلَقَةً فَخَلَقَ فَسَوَّى
﴿۳۸﴾
Qarib: Then he was a clot of blood, then He created and formed him
Sarwar: Was he not once just a drop of discharged sperm. Shakir: Then he was a clot of blood, so He created (him) then made (him) perfect Pickthall: Then he became a clot; then (Allah) shaped and fashioned Yusufali: Then did he become a leech-like clot; then did (Allah) make and fashion (him) in due proportion.
فَجَعَلَ مِنْهُ الزَّوْجَيْنِ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنْثَى
﴿۳۹﴾
Qarib: and made from him two kinds, male and female.
Sarwar: Was he not turned into a clot of blood? God then formed him and gave him proper shape. From the human being, God made males and females in pairs. Shakir: Then He made of him two kinds, the male and the female Pickthall: And made of him a pair, the male and female. Yusufali: And of him He made two sexes, male and female.
أَلَيْسَ ذَلِكَ بِقَادِرٍ عَلَى أَنْ يُحْيِيَ الْمَوْتَى
﴿۴۰﴾
Qarib: What, is He then unable to revive the dead?
Sarwar: Does He then not have the power to bring the dead back to life? Shakir: Is not He able to give life to the dead? Pickthall: Is not He (Who doeth so) Able to bring the dead to life? Yusufali: Has not He, (the same), the power to give life to the dead? |
