Sura 37: AS-SAAFFAT (THOSE WHO SET THE RANKS) - Juz' 23

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Qarib: By the aligners (angels) aligning.
Sarwar: I swear by (the angels) who stand in ranks,
Shakir: I swear by those who draw themselves out in ranks
Pickthall: By those who set the ranks in battle order
Yusufali: By those who range themselves in ranks,
Qarib: and the drivers driving,
Sarwar: by those who drive away the devil (to protect Our revelation),
Shakir: Then those who drive away with reproof,
Pickthall: And those who drive away (the wicked) with reproof
Yusufali: And so are strong in repelling (evil),
Qarib: and those who recite the Remembrance
Sarwar: and those who recite Our revelations,
Shakir: Then those who recite, being mindful,
Pickthall: And those who read (the Word) for a reminder,
Yusufali: And thus proclaim the Message (of Allah)!
Qarib: surely, your God is One,
Sarwar: that your Lord is the only Lord.
Shakir: Most surely your Allah is One:
Pickthall: Lo! thy Lord is surely One;
Yusufali: Verily, verily, your Allah is one!-
Qarib: the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them; the Lord of the Easts.
Sarwar: He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, the Lord of the Eastern regions.
Shakir: The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, and Lord of the easts
Pickthall: Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all that is between them, and Lord of the sun's risings.
Yusufali: Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all between them, and Lord of every point at the rising of the sun!
Qarib: We have adorned the lower heaven with the adornment of the planets,
Sarwar: We have decked the lower heavens with stars
Shakir: Surely We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment, the stars,
Pickthall: Lo! We have adorned the lowest heaven with an ornament, the planets;
Yusufali: We have indeed decked the lower heaven with beauty (in) the stars,-
Qarib: a protection against every rebel satan;
Sarwar: to protect them from the rebellious satan.
Shakir: And (there is) a safeguard against every rebellious Shaitan
Pickthall: With security from every froward devil.
Yusufali: (For beauty) and for guard against all obstinate rebellious evil spirits,
Qarib: so they cannot listen to the High Assembly, for they are pelted from every side.
Sarwar: The devils cannot hear those high above. They would be struck from all sides
Shakir: They cannot listen to the exalted assembly and they are thrown at from every side,
Pickthall: They cannot listen to the Highest Chiefs for they are pelted from every side,
Yusufali: (So) they should not strain their ears in the direction of the Exalted Assembly but be cast away from every side,
Qarib: They are rejected and theirs is an everlasting punishment;
Sarwar: and driven away to suffer the necessary torment.
Shakir: Being driven off, and for them is a perpetual chastisement,
Pickthall: Outcast, and theirs is a perpetual torment;
Yusufali: Repulsed, for they are under a perpetual penalty,
Qarib: except such as snatches a fragment, and he is pursued by a piercing flame.
Sarwar: Some of them who stealthily steal words from the heavens are pursued by a glistening flame.
Shakir: Except him who snatches off but once, then there follows him a brightly shining flame
Pickthall: Save him who snatcheth a fragment, and there pursueth him a piercing flame.
Yusufali: Except such as snatch away something by stealth, and they are pursued by a flaming fire, of piercing brightness.
Qarib: So ask them, are they stronger in constitution, or those whom We have created. We have created them of sticky clay.
Sarwar: (Muhammad), ask them, "Have they (people) been created stronger than what We have created?" We have created them from moist clay.
Shakir: Then ask them whether they are stronger in creation or those (others) whom We have created. Surely We created them of firm clay
Pickthall: Then ask them (O Muhammad): Are they stronger as a creation, or those (others) whom we have created? Lo! We created them of plastic clay.
Yusufali: Just ask their opinion: are they the more difficult to create, or the (other) beings We have created? Them have We created out of a sticky clay!
Qarib: No, you marvel, while they scoff.
Sarwar: (Muhammad), you will be surprised that they still mock (God's revelations).
Shakir: Nay! you wonder while they mock,
Pickthall: Nay, but thou dost marvel when they mock
Yusufali: Truly dost thou marvel, while they ridicule,
Qarib: When they are reminded, they do not remember.
Sarwar: They pay no attention when they are reminded
Shakir: And when they are reminded, they mind not,
Pickthall: And heed not when they are reminded,
Yusufali: And, when they are admonished, pay no heed,-
Qarib: When they are shown a sign, they scoff at it
Sarwar: and when they see a miracle, they mock
Shakir: And when they see a sign they incite one another to scoff,
Pickthall: And seek to scoff when they behold a portent.
Yusufali: And, when they see a Sign, turn it to mockery,
Qarib: and say: 'This is nothing but clear sorcery! '
Sarwar: it and say, "It is only plain magic".
Shakir: And they say: This is nothing but clear magic:
Pickthall: And they say: Lo! this is mere magic;
Yusufali: And say, "This is nothing but evident sorcery!
Qarib: What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we be resurrected.
Sarwar: They say, "Shall we be brought to life again after we die and turn into dust and bones?
Shakir: What! when we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then certainly be raised,
Pickthall: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised (again)?
Yusufali: "What! when we die, and become dust and bones, shall we (then) be raised up (again)
Qarib: What, and our forefathers, the ancients! '
Sarwar: Will our forefathers also be brought to life again?"
Shakir: Or our fathers of yore?
Pickthall: And our forefathers?
Yusufali: "And also our fathers of old?"
Qarib: Say: 'Yes, but worthless. '
Sarwar: Say, "You will certainly be brought back to life in disgrace".
Shakir: Say: Aye! and you shall be abject
Pickthall: Say (O Muhammad): Ye, in truth; and ye will be brought low.
Yusufali: Say thou: "Yea, and ye shall then be humiliated (on account of your evil)."
Qarib: It will be but one Shout, then see, they are watching
Sarwar: The Day of Judgment will come within a single roar and they will remain gazing at it.
Shakir: So it shall only be a single cry, when lo! they shall see
Pickthall: There is but one Shout, and lo! they behold,
Yusufali: Then it will be a single (compelling) cry; and behold, they will begin to see!
Qarib: and they will say: 'Woe for us. This is the Day of Recompense. '
Sarwar: They will say, "Woe to us!" (They will be told), "This is the day of receiving recompense".
Shakir: And they shall say: O woe to us! this is the day of requital
Pickthall: And say: Ah, woe for us! This is the Day of Judgment.
Yusufali: They will say, "Ah! Woe to us! This is the Day of Judgment!"
Qarib: This is the Day of Decision which you belied.
Sarwar: This is the Day of Judgment in which you disbelieved.
Shakir: This is the day of the judgment which you called a lie
Pickthall: This is the Day of Separation, which ye used to deny.
Yusufali: (A voice will say,) "This is the Day of Sorting Out, whose truth ye (once) denied!"
Qarib: Gather together the evildoers, their wives, and that they were worshipping,
Sarwar: (God will command the angels), "Gather together the unjust, their spouses, and what they had worshipped
Shakir: Gather together those who were unjust and their associates, and what they used to worship
Pickthall: (And it is said unto the angels): Assemble those who did wrong, together with their wives and what they used to worship
Yusufali: "Bring ye up", it shall be said, "The wrong-doers and their wives, and the things they worshipped-
Qarib: other than Allah, and guide them to the Path of Hell!
Sarwar: besides God, and show them the way of hell.
Shakir: Besides Allah, then lead them to the way to hell
Pickthall: Instead of Allah, and lead them to the path to hell;
Yusufali: "Besides Allah, and lead them to the Way to the (Fierce) Fire!
Qarib: And halt them so that they may be questioned.
Sarwar: Stop them. They must be questioned."
Shakir: And stop them, for they shall be questioned:
Pickthall: And stop them, for they must be questioned.
Yusufali: "But stop them, for they must be asked:
مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ ﴿۲۵﴾
Qarib: 'Why do you not help one another?
Sarwar: They will be asked, "Why do you not help each other?"
Shakir: What is the matter with you that you do not help each other?
Pickthall: What aileth you that ye help not one another?
Yusufali: "'What is the matter with you that ye help not each other?'"
Qarib: No, today they will resign themselves in submission,
Sarwar: In fact, on that day they will be submissive.
Shakir: Nay! on that day they shall be submissive
Pickthall: Nay, but this day they make full submission.
Yusufali: Nay, but that day they shall submit (to Judgment);
Qarib: and approach each other with questions,
Sarwar: They will turn to each other saying,
Shakir: And some of them shall advance towards others, questioning each other
Pickthall: And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.
Yusufali: And they will turn to one another, and question one another.
Qarib: saying: 'You used to come to us from the right hand. '
Sarwar: "It was you who tried to mislead us from righteousness".
Shakir: They shall say: Surely you used to come to us from the right side
Pickthall: They say: Lo! ye used to come unto us, imposing, (swearing that ye spoke the truth).
Yusufali: They will say: "It was ye who used to come to us from the right hand (of power and authority)!"
Qarib: But they reply: 'Rather, you were not believers.
Sarwar: Others will respond, "It was you who did not want to have any faith.
Shakir: They shall say: Nay, you (yourselves) were not believers;
Pickthall: They answer: Nay, but ye (yourselves) were not believers.
Yusufali: They will reply: "Nay, ye yourselves had no Faith!
Qarib: We had no authority over you, but you were an insolent nation.
Sarwar: We had no authority over you, in fact, you were a rebellious people.
Shakir: And we had no authority over you, but you were an inordinate people;
Pickthall: We had no power over you, but ye were wayward folk.
Yusufali: "Nor had we any authority over you. Nay, it was ye who were a people in obstinate rebellion!
Qarib: The statement of Our Lord is realized against us, and we are tasting it,
Sarwar: Thus, the words of Our Lord about us have come true and now we are suffering the torment.
Shakir: So the sentence of our Lord has come to pass against us: (now) we shall surely taste;
Pickthall: Now the Word of our Lord hath been fulfilled concerning us. Lo! we are about to taste (the doom).
Yusufali: "So now has been proved true, against us, the word of our Lord that we shall indeed (have to) taste (the punishment of our sins).
Qarib: we perverted you, indeed, we were perverts. '
Sarwar: We mislead you and we ourselves had also gone astray."
Shakir: So we led you astray, for we ourselves were erring
Pickthall: Thus we misled you. Lo! we were (ourselves) astray.
Yusufali: "We led you astray: for truly we were ourselves astray."
Qarib: Therefore, on that Day they will all share Our punishment.
Sarwar: On that day they will all share the torment.
Shakir: So they shall on that day be sharers in the chastisement one with another
Pickthall: Then lo! this day they (both) are sharers in the doom.
Yusufali: Truly, that Day, they will (all) share in the Penalty.
Qarib: As such We shall deal with the evildoers.
Sarwar: This is how We deal with the criminals.
Shakir: Surely thus do We deal with the guilty
Pickthall: Lo! thus deal We with the guilty.
Yusufali: Verily that is how We shall deal with Sinners.
Qarib: For when it was said to them: 'There is no god except Allah, ' they were always proud
Sarwar: They were the ones, who on being told, "God is only One," become puffed-up with pride
Shakir: Surely they used to behave proudly when it was said to them: There is no god but Allah;
Pickthall: For when it was said unto them, There is no Allah save Allah, they were scornful
Yusufali: For they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff themselves up with Pride,
Qarib: and said: 'Are we to renounce our gods for the sake of a mad poet? '
Sarwar: and said, "Should we give up our idols for the sake of an insane poet".
Shakir: And to say: What! shall we indeed give up our gods for the sake of a mad poet?
Pickthall: And said: Shall we forsake our gods for a mad poet?
Yusufali: And say: "What! shall we give up our gods for the sake of a Poet possessed?"
Qarib: No, indeed, he has brought the truth, and confirmed the Messengers.
Sarwar: In fact, he had brought them the truth and had acknowledged the Messengers (who were sent before him).
Shakir: Nay: he has come with the truth and verified the messengers
Pickthall: Nay, but he brought the Truth, and he confirmed those sent (before him).
Yusufali: Nay! he has come with the (very) Truth, and he confirms (the Message of) the messengers (before him).

Yusufali: Ye shall indeed taste of the Grievous Penalty;-
Qarib: but you shall not be recompensed except for what you were doing.
Sarwar: and will be recompensed only for what you deserve.
Shakir: And you shall not be rewarded except (for) what you did
Pickthall: Ye are requited naught save what ye did -
Yusufali: But it will be no more than the retribution of (the Evil) that ye have wrought;-
Qarib: But for the sincere worshipers of Allah,
Sarwar: But the sincere servants of God

Shakir: For them is a known sustenance,
Pickthall: For them there is a known provision,
Yusufali: For them is a Sustenance determined,
Qarib: fruits. And they are receivers of generosity
Sarwar: and fruits while they are honored.
Shakir: Fruits, and they shall be highly honored,
Pickthall: Fruits. And they will be honoured
Yusufali: Fruits (Delights); and they (shall enjoy) honour and dignity,

Yusufali: "Who used to say, 'what! art thou amongst those who bear witness to the Truth (of the Message)?
Qarib: When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we be recompensed?"
Sarwar: Shall we be recompensed for our deeds after we die and become bones and dust?
Shakir: What! when we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then be certainly brought to judgment?

Yusufali: "'When we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed receive rewards and punishments?'"
Qarib: And he will reply: 'Are you looking down (into Hell)? '
Sarwar: Do you want to see him?' "
Shakir: He shall say: Will you look on?

Yusufali: (A voice) said: "Would ye like to look down?"
Qarib: Then, he will look and see him in the midst of Hell.
Sarwar: He will look down and see him in hell.
Shakir: Then he looked down and saw him in the midst of hell
Pickthall: Then looketh he and seeth him in the depth of hell.

Pickthall: He saith: By Allah, thou verily didst all but cause my ruin,
Yusufali: He said: "By Allah! thou wast little short of bringing me to perdition!
Qarib: But for the Favor of Allah I should have surely been among those who were arraigned (with you in Hell).
Sarwar: Had I not the guidance of my Lord, I would certainly have been brought into torment".
Shakir: And had it not been for the favor of my Lord, I would certainly have been among those brought up
Pickthall: And had it not been for the favour of my Lord, I too had been of those haled forth (to doom).
Yusufali: "Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I should certainly have been among those brought (there)!

Qarib: What then, shall we not die
Sarwar: He will ask his companion, "Did you not say that there would only be one death
Shakir: Is it then that we are not going to die,
Pickthall: Are we then not to die
Yusufali: "Is it (the case) that we shall not die,
Qarib: except our first death, and shall we not be punished? '
Sarwar: and that we would not be punished?"
Shakir: Except our previous death? And we shall not be chastised?
Pickthall: Saving our former death, and are we not to be punished?
Yusufali: "Except our first death, and that we shall not be punished?"
Qarib: Indeed, this is the mighty victory,
Sarwar: This is certainly the greatest triumph
Shakir: Most surely this is the mighty achievement
Pickthall: Lo! this is the supreme triumph.
Yusufali: Verily this is the supreme achievement!
Qarib: and for the like of this let the workers work.
Sarwar: for which one must strive hard.
Shakir: For the like of this then let the workers work
Pickthall: For the like of this, then, let the workers work.
Yusufali: For the like of this let all strive, who wish to strive.
Qarib: Is this a better hospitality or the tree of AzZakkum!
Sarwar: Is this not a better reward than the tree of Zaqqum
Shakir: Is this better as an entertainment or the tree of Zaqqum?
Pickthall: Is this better as a welcome, or the tree of Zaqqum?
Yusufali: Is that the better entertainment or the Tree of Zaqqum?
Qarib: We have made this (tree) a trial for the evildoers.
Sarwar: which We have made as a torment for the unjust?
Shakir: Surely We have made it to be a trial to the unjust
Pickthall: Lo! We have appointed it a torment for wrong-doers.
Yusufali: For We have truly made it (as) a trial for the wrong-doers.
Qarib: It is a tree that grows from the bottom of Hell;
Sarwar: (Zaqqum) is a tree which grows from the deepest part of hell,
Shakir: Surely it is a tree that-grows in the bottom of the hell;

Qarib: its spathes are like the heads of satans
Sarwar: and its fruits are like the heads of devils.
Shakir: Its produce is as it were the heads of the serpents

Qarib: on it they shall feed, and with it they shall fill their bellies.
Sarwar: The dwellers of hell will eat that fruit and fill-up their bellies.
Shakir: Then most surely they shall eat of it and fill (their) bellies with it
Pickthall: And lo! they verily must eat thereof, and fill (their) bellies therewith.
Yusufali: Truly they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith.
Qarib: On top of it they shall have a brew of boiling water,
Sarwar: Then they will have on top of it a mixture of boiling water.
Shakir: Then most surely they shall have after it to drink of a mixture prepared in boiling water
Pickthall: And afterward, lo! thereupon they have a drink of boiling water
Yusufali: Then on top of that they will be given a mixture made of boiling water.
Qarib: then their return is to Hell.
Sarwar: They can only return to hell.
Shakir: Then most surely their return shall be to hell
Pickthall: And afterward, lo! their return is surely unto hell.
Yusufali: Then shall their return be to the (Blazing) Fire.

Qarib: yet they run in their footsteps,
Sarwar: and rushed to follow them.
Shakir: So in their footsteps they are being hastened on
Pickthall: But they make haste (to follow) in their footsteps.
Yusufali: So they (too) were rushed down on their footsteps!

Qarib: though We had sent among them warners.
Sarwar: We had certainly sent warners to them.
Shakir: And certainly We sent among them warners
Pickthall: And verily We sent among them warners.
Yusufali: But We sent aforetime, among them, (messengers) to admonish them;-
Qarib: See then the end of those who were warned,
Sarwar: See how terrible was the end of those who were warned.
Shakir: Then see how was the end of those warned,
Pickthall: Then see the nature of the consequence for those warned,
Yusufali: Then see what was the end of those who were admonished (but heeded not),-
