Qarib: Each of them We seized for his sin. On some We loosed a squall of pebbles, and others were seized by the Cry. Some We caused to be swallowed up by the earth, and some We drowned. Allah would never wrong them but they wronged themselves.
Sarwar: We punished all of these people because of their sin. Some of them were struck by a violent sand-storm, some by a blast of sound, others were swallowed up by the earth, and some were drowned (in the sea). God did not do injustice to them, but they had wronged themselves. Shakir: So each We punished for his sin; of them was he on whom We sent down a violent storm, and of them was he whom the rumbling overtook, and of them was he whom We made to be swallowed up by the earth, and of them was he whom We drowned; and it did not beseem Allah that He should be unjust to them, but they were unjust to their own souls Pickthall: So We took each one in his sin; of them was he on whom We sent a hurricane, and of them was he who was overtaken by the (Awful) Cry, and of them was he whom We caused the earth to swallow, and of them was he whom We drowned. It was not for Allah to wrong them, but they wronged themselves. Yusufali: Each one of them We seized for his crime: of them, against some We sent a violent tornado (with showers of stones); some were caught by a (mighty) Blast; some We caused the earth to swallow up; and some We drowned (in the waters): It was not Allah Who injured (or oppressed) them:" They injured (and oppressed) their own souls.
Qarib: The likeness of those who have taken guardians, other than Allah, is as the likeness of the spider that takes to itself a house; surely the spider's house is the weakest house if they but knew.
Sarwar: The belief of considering other things as one's guardians besides God is as feeble as a spider's web. The spider's web is the frailest of all dwellings, if only they knew it. Shakir: The parable of those who take guardians besides Allah is as the parable of the spider that makes for itself a house; and most surely the frailest of the houses is the spider's house did they but know Pickthall: The likeness of those who choose other patrons than Allah is as the likeness of the spider when she taketh unto herself a house, and lo! the frailest of all houses is the spider's house, if they but knew. Yusufali: The parable of those who take protectors other than Allah is that of the spider, who builds (to itself) a house; but truly the flimsiest of houses is the spider's house;- if they but knew.
Qarib: Allah knows whatever they call upon other than Him; He is the Almighty, the Wise.
Sarwar: God knows whatever they worship besides Him; He is the Majestic and All-wise. Shakir: Surely Allah knows whatever thing they call upon besides Him; and He is the Mighty, the Wise Pickthall: Lo! Allah knoweth what thing they invoke instead of Him. He is the Mighty, the Wise. Yusufali: Verily Allah doth know of (every thing) whatever that they call upon besides Him: and He is Exalted (in power), Wise.
Qarib: And We strike these parables for the people, but none understands except the knowledgeable.
Sarwar: These are parables which We tell to human being, but only the learned ones understand them. Shakir: And (as for) these examples, We set them forth for men, and none understand them but the learned Pickthall: As for these similitudes, We coin them for mankind, but none will grasp their meaning save the wise. Yusufali: And such are the Parables We set forth for mankind, but only those understand them who have knowledge.
Qarib: Allah has created the heavens and the earth with the truth. Surely, in that there is a sign for believers.
Sarwar: God has created the heavens and the earth for a genuine purpose. In this there is evidence (of the truth) for the believers. Shakir: Allah created the heavens and the earth with truth; most surely there is a sign in this for the believers Pickthall: Allah created the heavens and the earth with truth. Lo! therein is indeed a portent for believers. Yusufali: Allah created the heavens and the earth in true (proportions): verily in that is a Sign for those who believe.
Qarib: Recite what has been sent down to you of the Book, and establish the prayer. Prayer forbids indecency and dishonor. The remembrance of Allah is greater, and Allah knows what you do.
Sarwar: (Muhammad), recite to them what has been revealed to you in the Book and be steadfast in prayer; prayer keeps one away from indecency and evil. It is the greatest act of worshipping God. God knows what you do. Shakir: Recite that which has been revealed to you of the Book and keep up prayer; surely prayer keeps (one) away from indecency and evil, and certainly the remembrance of Allah is the greatest, and Allah knows what you do Pickthall: Recite that which hath been inspired in thee of the Scripture, and establish worship. Lo! worship preserveth from lewdness and iniquity, but verily remembrance of Allah is more important. And Allah knoweth what ye do. Yusufali: Recite what is sent of the Book by inspiration to thee, and establish regular Prayer: for Prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds; and remembrance of Allah is the greatest (thing in life) without doubt. And Allah knows the (deeds) that ye do.
Qarib: And do not dispute with the People of the Book (Nazarenes) except in the best manner, except for those among them who do wrong and say (to them): 'We believe in that which was sent down to us and that which was sent down to you. Our God and your God is One, and to Him we have surrendered. '
Sarwar: Do not argue with the People of the Book except only by the best manner, except the unjust among them. Tell them, "We believe in what is revealed to us and to you. Our Lord and your Lord is one. We have submitted ourselves to His will". Shakir: And do not dispute with the followers of the Book except by what is best, except those of them who act unjustly, and say: We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you, and our Allah and your Allah is One, and to Him do we submit Pickthall: And argue not with the People of the Scripture unless it be in (a way) that is better, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you; our Allah and your Allah is One, and unto Him we surrender. Yusufali: And dispute ye not with the People of the Book, except with means better (than mere disputation), unless it be with those of them who inflict wrong (and injury): but say, "We believe in the revelation which has come down to us and in that which came down to you; Our Allah and your Allah is one; and it is to Him we bow (in Islam)."
Qarib: As such, We have sent down to you the Book. Those to whom We gave the Book believe in it, and so do some of these. None reject Our verses except the unbelievers.
Sarwar: We have revealed the Book to you. Some of the People of the Book and some of the pagans also believe in it. No one rejects Our revelations except the infidels. Shakir: And thus have We revealed the Book to you. So those whom We have given the Book believe in it, and of these there are those who believe in it, and none deny Our communications except the unbelievers Pickthall: In like manner We have revealed unto thee the Scripture, and those unto whom We gave the Scripture aforetime will believe therein; and of these (also) there are some who believe therein. And none deny Our revelations save the disbelievers. Yusufali: And thus (it is) that We have sent down the Book to thee. So the People of the Book believe therein, as also do some of these (pagan Arabs): and none but Unbelievers reject our signs.
Qarib: Never before did you recited any Book, or inscribe it with your right hand. If you had done so, those who follow falsehood would have doubted.
Sarwar: You were not able to read or write before the Quran was revealed to you; otherwise, the followers of falsehood would have tried to confuse the matter. Shakir: And you did not recite before it any book, nor did you transcribe one with your right hand, for then could those who say untrue things have doubted Pickthall: And thou (O Muhammad) wast not a reader of any scripture before it, nor didst thou write it with thy right hand, for then might those have doubted, who follow falsehood. Yusufali: And thou wast not (able) to recite a Book before this (Book came), nor art thou (able) to transcribe it with thy right hand: In that case, indeed, would the talkers of vanities have doubted.
Qarib: No, rather they are clear verses in the chests of those who have been given knowledge. None disbelieves Our verses except the harmdoers.
Sarwar: In fact, the Quran consists of illustrious verses that exist in the hearts of those who have knowledge. No one rejects Our revelations except the unjust ones. Shakir: Nay! these are clear communications in the breasts of those who are granted knowledge; and none deny Our communications except the unjust Pickthall: But it is clear revelations in the hearts of those who have been given knowledge, and none deny Our revelations save wrong-doers. Yusufali: Nay, here are Signs self-evident in the hearts of those endowed with knowledge: and none but the unjust reject Our Signs. |
