Sura 23: AL-MUMENOON (THE BELIEVERS) - Juz' 18

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Qarib: Prosperous are the believers,
Sarwar: Triumphant indeed are the believers,
Shakir: Successful indeed are the believers,
Pickthall: Successful indeed are the believers
Yusufali: The believers must (eventually) win through,-
Qarib: who are humble in their prayers;
Sarwar: who are submissive to God in their prayers,
Shakir: Who are humble in their prayers,
Pickthall: Who are humble in their prayers,
Yusufali: Those who humble themselves in their prayers;
Qarib: who turn away from idle talk;
Sarwar: who avoid impious talks,
Shakir: And who keep aloof from what is vain,
Pickthall: And who shun vain conversation,
Yusufali: Who avoid vain talk;
Qarib: who give charity,
Sarwar: pay their religious tax
Shakir: And who are givers of poor-rate,
Pickthall: And who are payers of the poor-due;
Yusufali: Who are active in deeds of charity;
Qarib: who guard their privates,
Sarwar: and restrain their carnal desires
Shakir: And who guard their private parts,
Pickthall: And who guard their modesty -
Yusufali: Who abstain from sex,
Qarib: except with their wives and what their right hand possess, and then they are not blamed.
Sarwar: except with their spouses and slave-girls. The practice of carnal relations is lawful with them.
Shakir: Except before their mates or those whom their right hands possess, for they surely are not blameable,
Pickthall: Save from their wives or the (slaves) that their right hands possess, for then they are not blameworthy,
Yusufali: Except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (in their case) they are free from blame,
Qarib: Those who seek beyond that are transgressors.
Sarwar: Those who desire to go beyond such limits they commit transgression,
Shakir: But whoever seeks to go beyond that, these are they that exceed the limits;
Pickthall: But whoso craveth beyond that, such are transgressors -
Yusufali: But those whose desires exceed those limits are transgressors;-
Qarib: (Prosperous are those) who preserve their trusts and pledges
Sarwar: those who are true to their trust,
Shakir: And those who are keepers of their trusts and their covenant,
Pickthall: And who are shepherds of their pledge and their covenant,
Yusufali: Those who faithfully observe their trusts and their covenants;
Qarib: and those who observe their prayers.
Sarwar: to their promise,
Shakir: And those who keep a guard on their prayers;
Pickthall: And who pay heed to their prayers.
Yusufali: And who (strictly) guard their prayers;-
Qarib: Those are the heirs
Sarwar: and who are steadfast in their prayer.
Shakir: These are they who are the heirs,
Pickthall: These are the heirs
Yusufali: These will be the heirs,
Qarib: who will inherit Paradise; they shall live there for ever.
Sarwar: These are the heirs of Paradise wherein they will live forever.
Shakir: Who shall inherit the Paradise; they shall abide therein
Pickthall: Who will inherit paradise. There they will abide.
Yusufali: Who will inherit Paradise: they will dwell therein (for ever).
Qarib: We created the human from an essence of clay:
Sarwar: We have created the human being from an extract of clay
Shakir: And certainly We created man of an extract of clay,
Pickthall: Verily We created man from a product of wet earth;
Yusufali: Man We did create from a quintessence (of clay);
Qarib: then We made him, a drop, in a secure receptacle (the womb).
Sarwar: which was then turned into a living germ and placed in safe depository.
Shakir: Then We made him a small seed in a firm resting-place,
Pickthall: Then placed him as a drop (of seed) in a safe lodging;
Yusufali: Then We placed him as (a drop of) sperm in a place of rest, firmly fixed;
Qarib: Then We created of the drop, a clot (of congealed blood) and We created the clot into bitesize tissue, then We created the bitesize tissue into bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, and then produced it an other creation. Blessed is Allah, the Best of creators!
Sarwar: The living germ, then, was turned into a shapeless lump of flesh from which bones were formed. The bones, then, were covered with flesh. At this stage, We caused it to become another creature. All blessings belong to God, the best Creator.
Shakir: Then We made the seed a clot, then We made the clot a lump of flesh, then We made (in) the lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, then We caused it to grow into another creation, so blessed be Allah, the best of the creators
Pickthall: Then fashioned We the drop a clot, then fashioned We the clot a little lump, then fashioned We the little lump bones, then clothed the bones with flesh, and then produced it as another creation. So blessed be Allah, the Best of creators!
Yusufali: Then We made the sperm into a clot of congealed blood; then of that clot We made a (foetus) lump; then we made out of that lump bones and clothed the bones with flesh; then we developed out of it another creature. So blessed be Allah, the best to create!
Qarib: After that you shall surely die,
Sarwar: Thereafter you will certainly die
Shakir: Then after that you will most surely die
Pickthall: Then lo! after that ye surely die.
Yusufali: After that, at length ye will die
Qarib: and be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection.
Sarwar: and you will be brought back to life again on the Day of Resurrection.
Shakir: Then surely on the day of resurrection you shall be raised
Pickthall: Then lo! on the Day of Resurrection ye are raised (again).
Yusufali: Again, on the Day of Judgment, will ye be raised up.
Qarib: We have created seven ways above you; of Our creation, We are never inattentive.
Sarwar: We have created seven heavens above you and have never been neglectful to Our Creation.
Shakir: And certainly We made above you seven heavens; and never are We heedless of creation
Pickthall: And We have created above you seven paths, and We are never unmindful of creation.
Yusufali: And We have made, above you, seven tracts; and We are never unmindful of (our) Creation.
Qarib: We sent down water from the sky in due measure, and lodged it in the earth, and We are able to take it all away.
Sarwar: We have sent a measure of water from the sky to stay on earth and We have the power to take it away.
Shakir: And We send down water from the cloud according to a measure, then We cause it to settle in the earth, and most surely We are able to carry it away
Pickthall: And we send down from the sky water in measure, and We give it lodging in the earth, and lo! We are Able to withdraw it.
Yusufali: And We send down water from the sky according to (due) measure, and We cause it to soak in the soil; and We certainly are able to drain it off (with ease).
Qarib: With it, We produced for you gardens of palms and vines, yielding abundant fruit for you to eat.
Sarwar: We have established for you gardens of palm trees and vineyards with this water with many fruits for you to consume.
Shakir: Then We cause to grow thereby gardens of palm trees and grapes for you; you have in them many fruits and from them do you eat;
Pickthall: Then We produce for you therewith gardens of date-palms and grapes, wherein is much fruit for you and whereof ye eat;
Yusufali: With it We grow for you gardens of date-palms and vines: in them have ye abundant fruits: and of them ye eat (and have enjoyment),-
Qarib: Also, a tree which grows on the Tor of Sinai and gives oil and relish for its eaters.
Sarwar: We have also created for you the tree that grows on Mount Sinai which produces oil and relish for those who use it.
Shakir: And a tree that grows out of Mount Sinai which produces oil and a condiment for those who eat
Pickthall: And a tree that springeth forth from Mount Sinai that groweth oil and relish for the eaters.
Yusufali: Also a tree springing out of Mount Sinai, which produces oil, and relish for those who use it for food.
Qarib: In the cattle, too, is a lesson for you. We let you drink of that which is in their bellies, and there are many benefits in them for you, and you eat of them,
Sarwar: There is a lesson for you concerning cattle. We provide you with drink from their bellies and many other benefits. You can consume them as meat.
Shakir: And most surely there is a lesson for you in the cattle: We make you to drink of what is in their bellies, and you have in them many advantages and of them you eat,
Pickthall: And lo! in the cattle there is verily a lesson for you. We give you to drink of that which is in their bellies, and many uses have ye in them, and of them do ye eat;
Yusufali: And in cattle (too) ye have an instructive example: from within their bodies We produce (milk) for you to drink; there are, in them, (besides), numerous (other) benefits for you; and of their (meat) ye eat;
Qarib: and upon them and on the ships you are carried.
Sarwar: You are carried by the animals on land and by the ships in the sea.
Shakir: And on them and on the ships you are borne
Pickthall: And on them and on the ship ye are carried.
Yusufali: An on them, as well as in slips, ye side.
Qarib: We sent Noah to his nation. 'Worship Allah, my nation, ' he said, 'for you have no god except He. Will you not be cautious? '
Sarwar: We sent Noah to his people who said, "My people, worship God for He is your only Lord. Will you then not have fear of Him?"
Shakir: And certainly We sent Nuh to his people, and he said: O my people! serve Allah, you have no god other than Him; will you not then guard (against evil)?
Pickthall: And We verily sent Noah unto his folk, and he said: O my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other Allah save Him. Will ye not ward off (evil)?
Yusufali: (Further, We sent a long line of prophets for your instruction). We sent Noah to his people: He said, "O my people! worship Allah! Ye have no other god but Him. Will ye not fear (Him)?"
Qarib: The unbelieving assembly of his nation said: 'This is but a human like you, who desires to gain superiority over you. Had Allah willed, He could have sent down angels. We never heard of this among our ancient forefathers.
Sarwar: The chiefs of the unbelievers said to the others, "He is a mere mortal like you. He wants only to be superior to you. Had God wanted He would have sent the angels (instead of him). We have never heard from our fathers anything like what he says.
Shakir: And the chiefs of those who disbelieved from among his people said: He is nothing but a mortal like yourselves who desires that he may have superiority over you, and if Allah had pleased, He could certainly have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our fathers of yore:
Pickthall: But the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved, said: This is only a mortal like you who would make himself superior to you. Had Allah willed, He surely could have sent down angels. We heard not of this in the case of our fathers of old.
Yusufali: The chiefs of the Unbelievers among his people said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: his wish is to assert his superiority over you: if Allah had wished (to send messengers), He could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a thing (as he says), among our ancestors of old."
Qarib: He is nothing else except a man who is mad, so watch him for awhile.
Sarwar: He is only an insane person. Wait for some time. Perhaps he will come to his senses."
Shakir: He is only a madman, so bear with him for a time
Pickthall: He is only a man in whom is a madness, so watch him for a while.
Yusufali: (And some said): "He is only a man possessed: wait (and have patience) with him for a time."
Qarib: He (Noah) said: 'Lord, help me, for they belie me. '
Sarwar: Noah prayed, "Lord, help me; they have called me a liar".
Shakir: He said: O my Lord! help me against their calling me a liar
Pickthall: He said: My Lord! Help me because they deny me.
Yusufali: (Noah) said: "O my Lord! help me: for that they accuse me of falsehood!"
Qarib: We said to him: 'Make the Ark under Our Eye, and Our Revelation, and then when Our command comes and the oven gushes water, take onboard a pair from every kind and your family, except him against whom the decision has already been passed. Do not address Me concerning those who have done evil; they shall be drowned.
Sarwar: We inspired him, saying, "Build the Ark before Our eyes and by the instruction of Our revelation. When our decree comes to pass and water comes forth from the Oven, embark in the Ark with a pair of every kind of animals and your family except those already doomed (to perish). Do not plead with Me for the unjust; they will be drowned."
Shakir: So We revealed to him, saying: Make the ark before Our eyes and (according to) Our revelation; and when Our command is given and the valley overflows, take into it of every kind a pair, two, and your followers, except those among them against whom the word has gone forth, and do not speak to Me in respect of those who are unjust; surely they shall be drowned
Pickthall: Then We inspired in him, saying: Make the ship under Our eyes and Our inspiration. Then, when Our command cometh and the oven gusheth water, introduce therein of every (kind) two spouses, and thy household save him thereof against whom the Word hath already gone forth. And plead not with Me on behalf of those who have done wrong. Lo! they will be drowned.
Yusufali: So We inspired him (with this message): "Construct the Ark within Our sight and under Our guidance: then when comes Our Command, and the fountains of the earth gush forth, take thou on board pairs of every species, male and female, and thy family- except those of them against whom the Word has already gone forth: And address Me not in favour of the wrong-doers; for they shall be drowned (in the Flood).
Qarib: And when you and all those with you are seated in the Ark, say: 'Praise be to Allah who has saved us from the harmdoing nation. '
Sarwar: When all of you settle in the Ark, say, "Only God Who has saved us from the unjust people deserves all praise".
Shakir: And when you are firmly seated, you and those with you, in the ark, say: All praise is due to Allah who delivered us from the unjust people:
Pickthall: And when thou art on board the ship, thou and whoso is with thee, then say: Praise be to Allah Who hath saved us from the wrongdoing folk!
Yusufali: And when thou hast embarked on the Ark - thou and those with thee,- say: "Praise be to Allah, Who has saved us from the people who do wrong."
Qarib: And say: 'Lord, let me land a blessed landing. You are the Best of harborers. '
Sarwar: Say, "Lord, grant us a blessed landing from the Ark; You are the One who provides the safest landing".
Shakir: And say: O my Lord! cause me to disembark a blessed alighting, and Thou art the best to cause to alight
Pickthall: And say: My Lord! Cause me to land at a blessed landing-place, for Thou art Best of all who bring to land.
Yusufali: And say: "O my Lord! enable me to disembark with thy blessing: for Thou art the Best to enable (us) to disembark."
Qarib: Surely, in that are signs, and surely We will put (nations) to the test.
Sarwar: In this story there is enough evidence (of the Truth); thus do We try (mankind)
Shakir: Most surely there are signs in this, and most surely We are ever trying (men)
Pickthall: Lo! herein verily are portents, for lo! We are ever putting (mankind) to the test.
Yusufali: Verily in this there are Signs (for men to understand); (thus) do We try (men).
Qarib: Then We produced after them another generation
Sarwar: We brought another generation into existence after the people of Noah.
Shakir: Then We raised up after them another generation
Pickthall: Then, after them, We brought forth another generation;
Yusufali: Then We raised after them another generation.
Qarib: and We sent to them a Messenger from themselves, saying: 'Worship Allah, for you have no god except He. Will you not be cautious? '
Sarwar: We sent to them a Messenger from among their own people who told them, "Worship God; He is your only Lord. Will you then not have fear of Him?"
Shakir: So We sent among them a messenger from among them, saying: Serve Allah, you have no god other than Him; will you not then guard (against evil)?
Pickthall: And we sent among them a messenger of their own, saying: Serve Allah, Ye have no other Allah save Him. Will ye not ward off (evil)?
Yusufali: And We sent to them a messenger from among themselves, (saying), "Worship Allah! ye have no other god but Him. Will ye not fear (Him)?"
Qarib: The unbelieving assembly of his nation, who belied the encounter of the Everlasting Life, and on whom We had bestowed ease in this life, said: 'This is but a human like yourselves; he eats of what you eat and drinks of what you drink.
Sarwar: A group of his people who disbelieved him and had called the Day of Judgment a lie and whom We had made prosperous in this life, said, "He is a mere mortal like you. He eats and drinks as you do.
Shakir: And the chiefs of his people who disbelieved and called the meeting of the hereafter a lie, and whom We had given plenty to enjoy in this world's life, said: This is nothing but a mortal like yourselves, eating of what you eat from and drinking of what you drink
Pickthall: And the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the Hereafter, and whom We had made soft in the life of the world, said: This is only a mortal like you, who eateth of that whereof ye eat and drinketh of that ye drink.
Yusufali: And the chiefs of his people, who disbelieved and denied the Meeting in the Hereafter, and on whom We had bestowed the good things of this life, said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: he eats of that of which ye eat, and drinks of what ye drink.
Qarib: If you obey a mortal like yourselves, you shall be lost.
Sarwar: If you follow a mortal like yourselves you will certainly be lost.
Shakir: And if you obey a mortal like yourselves, then most surely you will be losers:
Pickthall: If ye were to obey a mortal like yourselves, then, lo! ye surely would be losers.
Yusufali: "If ye obey a man like yourselves, behold, it is certain ye will be lost.
Qarib: What, does he promise you that when you are dead and turned to dust and bones, you will be brought forth?
Sarwar: Does he promise you that after you die and become dust and bones you will be brought back to life again?
Shakir: What! does he threaten you that when you are dead and become dust and bones that you shall then be brought forth?
Pickthall: Doth he promise you that you, when ye are dead and have become dust and bones, will (again) be brought forth?
Yusufali: "Does he promise that when ye die and become dust and bones, ye shall be brought forth (again)?
Qarib: After, after with that which you are promised!
Sarwar: Such a promise will never come true.
Shakir: Far, far is that which you are threatened with
Pickthall: Begone, begone, with that which ye are promised!
Yusufali: "Far, very far is that which ye are promised!
Qarib: There is nothing but our present life; we die, and we live, and we shall not be resurrected.
Sarwar: This is our only life. We live and will die but we will never be brought back to life again.
Shakir: There is naught but our life in this world; we die and we live and we shall not be raised again
Pickthall: There is naught but our life of the world; we die and we live, and we shall not be raised (again).
Yusufali: "There is nothing but our life in this world! We shall die and we live! But we shall never be raised up again!
Qarib: He is nothing but a man who has forged against Allah a lie, we will never believe him. '
Sarwar: He is only a man who invents lies against God, so have no faith in him".
Shakir: He is naught but a man who has forged a lie against Allah, and we are not going to believe in him
Pickthall: He is only a man who hath invented a lie about Allah. We are not going to put faith in him.
Yusufali: "He is only a man who invents a lie against Allah, but we are not the ones to believe in him!"
Qarib: He said: 'Help me, Lord, they belie me. '
Sarwar: The Messenger prayed, "Lord, help me; they have called me a liar".
Shakir: He said: O my Lord! help me against their calling me a liar
Pickthall: He said: My Lord! Help me because they deny me.
Yusufali: (The prophet) said: "O my Lord! help me: for that they accuse me of falsehood."
Qarib: He replied: 'Before long, by the morning, they shall be remorseful. '
Sarwar: God replied, "After a very short time they will certainly regret for their deeds."
Shakir: He said: In a little while they will most certainly be repenting
Pickthall: He said: In a little while they surely will become repentant.
Yusufali: (Allah) said: "In but a little while, they are sure to be sorry!"
Qarib: And the Cry seized them in justice and We made them withered. So begone with the harmdoing nation.
Sarwar: A blast struck them for a just cause, and We made them look like withered leaves. God keeps the unjust people away from His mercy.
Shakir: So the punishment overtook them in justice, and We made them as rubbish; so away with the unjust people
Pickthall: So the (Awful) Cry overtook them rightfully, and We made them like as wreckage (that a torrent hurleth). A far removal for wrongdoing folk!
Yusufali: Then the Blast overtook them with justice, and We made them as rubbish of dead leaves (floating on the stream of Time)! So away with the people who do wrong!
Qarib: After them We produced other generations
Sarwar: After them We brought another generation into existence.
Shakir: Then We raised after them other generations
Pickthall: Then after them We brought forth other generations.
Yusufali: Then We raised after them other generations.
Qarib: no nation outstrips its term, nor do they put it back.
Sarwar: Every nation has an appointed life span.
Shakir: No people can hasten on their doom nor can they postpone (it)
Pickthall: No nation can outstrip its term, nor yet postpone it.
Yusufali: No people can hasten their term, nor can they delay (it).
Qarib: Then We sent Our Messengers in succession. Yet whenever its Messenger came to a nation they belied him, so We made them follow others, and We made them but as tales, so begone the nation who did not believe!
Sarwar: We sent Our messengers one after the other but whenever a Messenger would come to a nation, its people would call him a liar and We would destroy one nation after the other, thus, only their stories were left behind them. God keeps the unbelievers far away from His Mercy.
Shakir: Then We sent Our messengers one after another; whenever there came to a people their messenger, they called him a liar, so We made some of them follow others and We made them stories; so away with a people who do not believe!
Pickthall: Then We sent our messengers one after another. Whenever its messenger came unto a nation they denied him; so We caused them to follow one another (to disaster) and We made them bywords. A far removal for folk who believe not!
Yusufali: Then sent We our messengers in succession: every time there came to a people their messenger, they accused him of falsehood: so We made them follow each other (in punishment): We made them as a tale (that is told): So away with a people that will not believe!
Qarib: Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our signs and clear authority
Sarwar: Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our miracles and clear authority
Shakir: Then We sent Musa and his brother Haroun, with Our communications and a clear authority,
Pickthall: Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our tokens and a clear warrant
Yusufali: Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron, with Our Signs and authority manifest,
Qarib: to Pharaoh and his Council, but they were very proud, and they were a tyrannical nation.
Sarwar: to the Pharaoh and his nobles. But they behaved proudly and thought themselves superior people.
Shakir: To Firon and his chiefs, but they behaved haughtily and they were an insolent people
Pickthall: Unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they scorned (them) and they were despotic folk.
Yusufali: To Pharaoh and his Chiefs: But these behaved insolently: they were an arrogant people.
Qarib: 'What! ' they said, 'are we to believe in two mortals like us, whose nation are our worshipers? '
Sarwar: They said, "Should we believe in two mere mortals who are like ourselves and whose people are our slaves?"
Shakir: And they said: What! shall we believe in two mortals like ourselves while their people serve us?
Pickthall: And they said: Shall we put faith in two mortals like ourselves, and whose folk are servile unto us?
Yusufali: They said: "Shall we believe in two men like ourselves? And their people are subject to us!"
Qarib: So they belied them, and they were among the destroyed.
Sarwar: They called them liars and consequently were destroyed.
Shakir: So they rejected them and became of those who were destroyed
Pickthall: So they denied them, and became of those who were destroyed.
Yusufali: So they accused them of falsehood, and they became of those who were destroyed.
Qarib: And We gave Moses the Book, in order that they might be guided.
Sarwar: We gave the Book to Moses so that perhaps they may have guidance.
Shakir: And certainly We gave Musa the Book that they may follow a right direction
Pickthall: And We verily gave Moses the Scripture, that haply they might go aright.
Yusufali: And We gave Moses the Book, in order that they might receive guidance.
Qarib: We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign, and gave them a refuge on a hillside where there was a hollow and a spring.
Sarwar: We made the son of Mary and his mother a miracle and settled them on a high land, quite secure and watered by a spring.
Shakir: And We made the son of Marium and his mother a sign, and We gave them a shelter on a lofty ground having meadows and springs
Pickthall: And We made the son of Mary and his mother a portent, and We gave them refuge on a height, a place of flocks and watersprings.
Yusufali: And We made the son of Mary and his mother as a Sign: We gave them both shelter on high ground, affording rest and security and furnished with springs.
Qarib: Messengers! Eat of that which is good and do good deeds; I have knowledge of the things you do.
Sarwar: I told them, "Messengers, eat from the pure things and act righteously; I know all that you do.
Shakir: O messengers! eat of the good things and do good; surely I know what you do
Pickthall: O ye messengers! Eat of the good things, and do right. Lo! I am Aware of what ye do.
Yusufali: O ye messengers! enjoy (all) things good and pure, and work righteousness: for I am well-acquainted with (all) that ye do.
Qarib: Your nation is but one nation, and I am your Lord, therefore fear Me.
Sarwar: Your religion is one and I am your Lord. Have fear of Me".
Shakir: And surely this your religion is one religion and I am your Lord, therefore be careful (of your duty) to Me
Pickthall: And lo! this your religion is one religion and I am your Lord, so keep your duty unto Me.
Yusufali: And verily this Brotherhood of yours is a single Brotherhood, and I am your Lord and Cherisher: therefore fear Me (and no other).
Qarib: Yet they have split their affairs between themselves into sects, each rejoicing in what it has.
Sarwar: The people divided themselves into many sects, each with their own book and each happy with whatever they had.
Shakir: But they cut off their religion among themselves into sects, each part rejoicing in that which is with them
Pickthall: But they (mankind) have broken their religion among them into sects, each group rejoicing in its tenets.
Yusufali: But people have cut off their affair (of unity), between them, into sects: each party rejoices in that which is with itself.
Qarib: Leave them in their perplexity for a time.
Sarwar: (Muhammad), leave them alone in their dark ignorance for an appointed time.
Shakir: Therefore leave them in their overwhelming ignorance till
Pickthall: So leave them in their error till a time.
Yusufali: But leave them in their confused ignorance for a time.
Qarib: Do they think that in giving them wealth and children
Sarwar: Do they think that We are helping them by giving them children and property?
Shakir: Do they think that by what We aid them with of wealth and children,
Pickthall: Think they that in the wealth and sons wherewith We provide them
Yusufali: Do they think that because We have granted them abundance of wealth and sons,
Qarib: We hasten in good works for them? No, they are not aware.
Sarwar: We provide them with the means of competing with each other in virtuous deeds, but they do not realize this.
Shakir: We are hastening to them of good things? Nay, they do not perceive
Pickthall: We hasten unto them with good things? Nay, but they perceive not.
Yusufali: We would hasten them on in every good? Nay, they do not understand.
Qarib: Those who tremble in fear of their Lord,
Sarwar: Only those who are, out of fear of Him, humble before their Lord,
Shakir: Surely they who from fear of their Lord are cautious,
Pickthall: Lo! those who go in awe for fear of their Lord.
Yusufali: Verily those who live in awe for fear of their Lord;
Qarib: who believe in the verses of their Lord;
Sarwar: who believe in the revelations of their Lord,
Shakir: And those who believe in the communications of their Lord,
Pickthall: And those who believe in the revelations of their Lord,
Yusufali: Those who believe in the Signs of their Lord;
Qarib: who associate none with their Lord,
Sarwar: who consider nothing equal to their Lord,
Shakir: And those who do not associate (aught) with their Lord,
Pickthall: And those who ascribe not partners unto their Lord,
Yusufali: Those who join not (in worship) partners with their Lord;
Qarib: who give what they give, with their hearts quaking, that they will return to their Lord:
Sarwar: who spend their property for the cause of God, and whose hearts are afraid of their return
Shakir: And those who give what they give (in alms) while their hearts are full of fear that to their Lord they must return,
Pickthall: And those who give that which they give with hearts afraid because they are about to return unto their Lord,
Yusufali: And those who dispense their charity with their hearts full of fear, because they will return to their Lord;-
Qarib: those, hasten in good works, outracing to them.
Sarwar: to God, these are the ones who really compete with each other in virtuous deeds and are the foremost ones in the task.
Shakir: These hasten to good things and they are foremost in (attaining) them
Pickthall: These race for the good things, and they shall win them in the race.
Yusufali: It is these who hasten in every good work, and these who are foremost in them.
Qarib: We charge no soul with more than it can bear. We have a Book with Us which speaks the truth, and they shall not be wronged.
Sarwar: We do not impose on any soul what is beyond its capacity. We have the Book which speaks the truth and no injustice will be done to it.
Shakir: And We do not lay on any soul a burden except to the extent of its ability, and with Us is a book which speaks the truth, and they shall not be dealt with unjustly
Pickthall: And we task not any soul beyond its scope, and with Us is a Record which speaketh the truth, and they will not be wronged.
Yusufali: On no soul do We place a burden greater than it can bear: before Us is a record which clearly shows the truth: they will never be wronged.
Qarib: But their hearts are in ignorance of this (Koran); and they have deeds besides that which they are doing.
Sarwar: In fact, the hearts of the unbelievers are in the dark because of their ignorance of real virtue; they act against it.
Shakir: Nay, their hearts are in overwhelming ignorance with respect to it and they have besides this other deeds which they do
Pickthall: Nay, but their hearts are in ignorance of this (Qur'an), and they have other works, besides, which they are doing;
Yusufali: But their hearts are in confused ignorance of this; and there are, besides that, deeds of theirs, which they will (continue) to do,-
Qarib: But when We seize with the punishment those of them that live in ease, they groan.
Sarwar: But when We will strike with torment those (unbelievers) who are rich, they will start to cry for help.
Shakir: Until when We overtake those who lead easy lives among them with punishment, lo! they cry for succor
Pickthall: Till when We grasp their luxurious ones with the punishment, behold! they supplicate.
Yusufali: Until, when We seize in Punishment those of them who received the good things of this world, behold, they will groan in supplication!
Qarib: (We shall say): 'Do not groan today, surely you shall receive no help from Us. '
Sarwar: We shall tell them, "Do not cry for help on this day; you will receive none from Us".
Shakir: Cry not for succor this day; surely you shall not be given help from Us
Pickthall: Supplicate not this day! Assuredly ye will not be helped by Us.
Yusufali: (It will be said): "Groan not in supplication this day: for ye shall certainly not be helped by Us.
Qarib: My verses were recited to you, but you turned upon your heels,
Sarwar: Our revelations had certainly been recited to you, but you turned your backs to them
Shakir: My communications were indeed recited to you, but you used to turn back on your heels,
Pickthall: My revelations were recited unto you, but ye used to turn back on your heels,
Yusufali: "My Signs used to be rehearsed to you, but ye used to turn back on your heels-
Qarib: being proud against it, talking foolishness by night.
Sarwar: and arrogantly mocked and reviled them.
Shakir: In arrogance; talking nonsense about the Quran, and left him like one telling fables by night
Pickthall: In scorn thereof. Nightly did ye rave together.
Yusufali: "In arrogance: talking nonsense about the (Qur'an), like one telling fables by night."
Qarib: Should they not think upon the saying? Or, did anything come upon them that had not come upon their ancient forefathers?
Sarwar: Was it that you did not give any thought to it (the Quran)? Was it different from what was revealed to your fathers?
Shakir: Is it then that they do not ponder over what is said, or is it that there has come to them that which did not come to their fathers of old?
Pickthall: Have they not pondered the Word, or hath that come unto them which came not unto their fathers of old?
Yusufali: Do they not ponder over the Word (of Allah), or has anything (new) come to them that did not come to their fathers of old?
Qarib: Or, is it because they do not recognize their Messenger that they denied him?
Sarwar: Or did you not recognize your Messenger and, thus, denied him (Muhammad)
Shakir: Or is it that they have not recognized their Messenger, so that they deny him?
Pickthall: Or know they not their messenger, and so reject him?
Yusufali: Or do they not recognise their Messenger, that they deny him?
Qarib: Do they say he is mad! No, he came to them with the truth, but most of them hate the truth.
Sarwar: or you said that he is possessed by satan? In fact, he has brought you the truth, but most of you dislike it.
Shakir: Or do they say: There is madness in him? Nay! he has brought them the truth, and most of them are averse from the truth
Pickthall: Or say they: There is a madness in him? Nay, but he bringeth them the Truth; and most of them are haters of the Truth.
Yusufali: Or do they say, "He is possessed"? Nay, he has brought them the Truth, but most of them hate the Truth.
Qarib: Had the truth followed their fancies, the heavens, the earth, and all who live in them would have surely been corrupted. No, We brought them their Remembrance; but from their Remembrance they turn away.
Sarwar: Had the truth followed their desires, the heavens and the earth and all that is in them would have been destroyed. We sent them the Quran but they ignored it.
Shakir: And should the truth follow their low desires, surely the heavens and the earth and all those who are therein would have perished. Nay! We have brought to them their reminder, but from their reminder they turn aside
Pickthall: And if the Truth had followed their desires, verily the heavens and the earth and whosoever is therein had been corrupted. Nay, We have brought them their Reminder, but from their Reminder they now turn away.
Yusufali: If the Truth had been in accord with their desires, truly the heavens and the earth, and all beings therein would have been in confusion and corruption! Nay, We have sent them their admonition, but they turn away from their admonition.
Qarib: Or, do you ask a tribute from them? Your Lord's tribute is better. He is the Best of providers.
Sarwar: (Do they disbelieve because) you asked them for payment? The reward that you will receive from your Lord is the best. He is the best Provider.
Shakir: Or is it that you ask them a recompense? But the recompense of your Lord is best, and He is the best of those who provide sustenance
Pickthall: Or dost thou ask of them (O Muhammad) any tribute? But the bounty of thy Lord is better, for He is Best of all who make provision.
Yusufali: Or is it that thou askest them for some recompense? But the recompense of thy Lord is best: He is the Best of those who give sustenance.
Qarib: Indeed you are calling them to a Straight Path,
Sarwar: (Muhammad), you certainly have called them to the right path,
Shakir: And most surely you invite them to a right way
Pickthall: And lo! thou summonest them indeed unto a straight path.
Yusufali: But verily thou callest them to the Straight Way;
Qarib: but those who disbelieve in the Everlasting Life deviate from the Path.
Sarwar: but those who disbelieve the life hereafter deviate from the right path.
Shakir: And most surely those who do not believe in the hereafter are deviating from the way
Pickthall: And lo! those who believe not in the Hereafter are indeed astray from the path.
Yusufali: And verily those who believe not in the Hereafter are deviating from that Way.
Qarib: If We had mercy on them and removed their afflictions, they would still persist in their insolence, blindly wandering.
Sarwar: Even if We were to grant them mercy and rescue them from hardship, they would still blindly persist in their rebellion.
Shakir: And if We show mercy to them and remove the distress they have, they would persist in their inordinacy, blindly wandering on
Pickthall: Though We had mercy on them and relieved them of the harm afflicting them, they still would wander blindly on in their contumacy.
Yusufali: If We had mercy on them and removed the distress which is on them, they would obstinately persist in their transgression, wandering in distraction to and fro.
Qarib: Already We have seized them with the punishment, but they neither humbled themselves to their Lord, nor did they beseech Him,
Sarwar: We struck them with torment, but they did not submit themselves to their Lord, nor did they make themselves humble
Shakir: And already We overtook them with chastisement, but they were not submissive to their Lord, nor do they humble themselves
Pickthall: Already have We grasped them with punishment, but they humble not themselves unto their Lord, nor do they pray,
Yusufali: We inflicted Punishment on them, but they humbled not themselves to their Lord, nor do they submissively entreat (Him)!-
Qarib: when We opened on them a gate of severe punishment, they utterly despaired.
Sarwar: until We opened the gate of greater torment (death) and they suddenly found themselves in despair.
Shakir: Until when We open upon them a door of severe chastisement, lo! they are in despair at it
Pickthall: Until, when We open for them the gate of extreme punishment, behold! they are aghast thereat.
Yusufali: Until We open on them a gate leading to a severe Punishment: then Lo! they will be plunged in despair therein!
Qarib: It was He who produced for you hearing, eyes, and hearts, yet little is that you thank.
Sarwar: It is God who has created ears, eyes, and hearts for you. Little are the thanks that you give.
Shakir: And He it is Who made for you the ears and the eyes and the hearts; little is it that you give thanks
Pickthall: He it is Who hath created for you ears and eyes and hearts. Small thanks give ye!
Yusufali: It is He Who has created for you (the faculties of) hearing, sight, feeling and understanding: little thanks it is ye give!
Qarib: It was He who scattered you on the earth, and before Him you shall be gathered.
Sarwar: It is God who has settled you on the earth and before Him you will all be assembled.
Shakir: And He it is Who multiplied you in the earth, and to Him you shall be gathered
Pickthall: And He it is Who hath sown you broadcast in the earth, and unto Him ye will be gathered.
Yusufali: And He has multiplied you through the earth, and to Him shall ye be gathered back.
Qarib: It is He who revives and makes to die, and to Him belong the alternation of the night and the day. Will you not understand!
Sarwar: It is He who gives life and causes death and it is He who alternates night and day. Will you not then understand?
Shakir: And He it is Who gives life and causes death, and (in) His (control) is the alternation of the night and the day; do you not then understand?
Pickthall: And He it is Who giveth life and causeth death, and His is the difference of night and day. Have ye then no sense?
Yusufali: It is He Who gives life and death, and to Him (is due) the alternation of Night and Day: will ye not then understand?
Qarib: No, but they said what the ancients said before them:
Sarwar: They say exactly the same thing as the people who lived before.
Shakir: Nay, they say the like of what the ancients said:
Pickthall: Nay, but they say the like of that which said the men of old;
Yusufali: On the contrary they say things similar to what the ancients said.
Qarib: 'When we are dead and become dust and bones shall we be resurrected?
Sarwar: They say, "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then be raised up again?
Shakir: They say: What! When we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be raised?
Pickthall: They say: When we are dead and have become (mere) dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again?
Yusufali: They say: "What! when we die and become dust and bones, could we really be raised up again?
Qarib: We and our fathers have been promised this before. It is but of the ancients' fictitious tales. '
Sarwar: Our fathers and we have been given such promises before. These are no more than ancient legends."
Shakir: Certainly we are promised this, and (so were) our fathers aforetime; this is naught but stories of those of old
Pickthall: We were already promised this, we and our forefathers. Lo! this is naught but fables of the men of old.
Yusufali: "Such things have been promised to us and to our fathers before! they are nothing but tales of the ancients!"

Qarib: Say: "If you have knowledge, 'to whom belongs the earth? ' and, 'whoever is in it? '"
Sarwar: (Muhammad), say to them, "Tell me, if you know, to whom does the earth and its contents belong?"
Shakir: Say: Whose is the earth, and whoever is therein, if you know?
Pickthall: Say: Unto Whom (belongeth) the earth and whosoever is therein, if ye have knowledge?
Yusufali: Say: "To whom belong the earth and all beings therein? (say) if ye know!"

Qarib: They will say: 'To Allah. ' Say: 'Then will you not remember! '
Sarwar: They will quickly reply, "It belongs to God." Say, "Will you not, then, take heed?"

Pickthall: They will say: Unto Allah. Say: Will ye not then remember?
Yusufali: They will say, "To Allah!" say: "Yet will ye not receive admonition?"

Sarwar: Ask them, "Who is the Lord of the seven heavens and the Great Throne?"
Shakir: Say: Who is the Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the mighty dominion?
Pickthall: Say: Who is Lord of the seven heavens, and Lord of the Tremendous Throne?
Yusufali: Say: "Who is the Lord of the seven heavens, and the Lord of the Throne (of Glory) Supreme?"
Qarib: They will say: 'Allah, ' Say: 'Will you not be cautious? '
Sarwar: They will quickly say, "It is God." Say, "Will you not then have fear of Him?"
Shakir: They will say: (This is) Allah's. Say: Will you not then guard (against evil)?
Pickthall: They will say: Unto Allah (all that belongeth). Say: Will ye not then keep duty (unto Him)?
Yusufali: They will say, "(They belong) to Allah." Say: "Will ye not then be filled with awe?"
Qarib: Say: 'In whose Hands is the Kingdom of all things, He protects, and none protects against Him, if you have knowledge! '
Sarwar: Ask them, "If you have any knowledge, in whose hands is the ownership of all things? Who is the one who gives protection and yet He Himself is never protected?"
Shakir: Say: Who is it in Whose hand is the kingdom of all things and Who gives succor, but against Him Succor is not given, if you do but know?
Pickthall: Say: In Whose hand is the dominion over all things and He protecteth, while against Him there is no protection, if ye have knowledge?

Qarib: Allah has not taken to Himself any son, there is no other god with Him. Were this otherwise each god would have taken that which he created, and some of them would have risen above others; Exalted is Allah beyond that they describe!
Sarwar: God has never given birth to a son and there is no other god besides Him. If there were, each god would have taken away his creatures and claimed superiority over the others. God is too exalted to be as they believe Him to be.
Shakir: Never did Allah take to Himself a son, and never was there with him any (other) god-- in that case would each god have certainly taken away what he created, and some of them would certainly have overpowered others; glory be to Allah above what they describe!
Pickthall: Allah hath not chosen any son, nor is there any god along with Him; else would each god have assuredly championed that which he created, and some of them would assuredly have overcome others. Glorified be Allah above all that they allege.
Yusufali: No son did Allah beget, nor is there any god along with Him: (if there were many gods), behold, each god would have taken away what he had created, and some would have lorded it over others! Glory to Allah! (He is free) from the (sort of) things they attribute to Him!

Sarwar: He has the knowledge of all seen and unseen things. He is too exalted to be considered equal to anything else.
Shakir: The Knower of the unseen and the seen, so may He be exalted above what they associate (with Him)
Pickthall: Knower of the Invisible and the Visible! and Exalted be He over all that they ascribe as partners (unto Him)!
Yusufali: He knows what is hidden and what is open: too high is He for the partners they attribute to Him!

Yusufali: Say: "O my Lord! if Thou wilt show me (in my lifetime) that which they are warned against,-

Yusufali: "Then, O my Lord! put me not amongst the people who do wrong!"

Qarib: Indeed, We are able to show you that which We promised them.
Sarwar: We have the Power to strike them with torment before your very eyes.
Shakir: And most surely We are well able to make you see what We threaten them with
Pickthall: And verily We are Able to show thee that which We have promised them.
Yusufali: And We are certainly able to show thee (in fulfilment) that against which they are warned.

Qarib: Repel evil with that which is better. We know that which they describe.
Sarwar: Respond to the injustice (done to you) with the better deed. We know best what they attribute to God.
Shakir: Repel evil by what is best; We know best what they describe
Pickthall: Repel evil with that which is better. We are Best Aware of that which they allege.
Yusufali: Repel evil with that which is best: We are well acquainted with the things they say.

Sarwar: I seek your protection should they approach me."
Shakir: And I seek refuge in Thee! O my Lord! from their presence
Pickthall: And I seek refuge in Thee, my Lord, lest they be present with me,
Yusufali: "And I seek refuge with Thee O my Lord! lest they should come near me."

Sarwar: When death approaches one of the unbelievers, he says, "Lord, send me back again
Shakir: Until when death overtakes one of them, he says: Send me back, my Lord, send me back;
Pickthall: Until, when death cometh unto one of them, he saith: My Lord! Send me back,
Yusufali: (In Falsehood will they be) Until, when death comes to one of them, he says: "O my Lord! send me back (to life),-

Sarwar: so that perhaps I shall act righteously for the rest of my life." Although he will say so but his wish will never come true. After death they will be behind a barrier until the day of their resurrection.
Shakir: Haply I may do good in that which I have left. By no means! it is a (mere) word that he speaks; and before them is a barrier until the day they are raised
Pickthall: That I may do right in that which I have left behind! But nay! It is but a word that he speaketh; and behind them is a barrier until the day when they are raised.
Yusufali: "In order that I may work righteousness in the things I neglected." - "By no means! It is but a word he says."- Before them is a Partition till the Day they are raised up.

Qarib: And when the Horn is blown, on that Day their ties of kindred shall be no more, nor will they ask each other.
Sarwar: There will be no kindred relations nor any opportunity to ask about others or seek their assistance after the trumpet has sounded.
Shakir: So when the trumpet is blown, there shall be no ties of relationship between them on that day, nor shall they ask of each other
Pickthall: And when the trumpet is blown there will be no kinship among them that day, nor will they ask of one another.
Yusufali: Then when the Trumpet is blown, there will be no more relationships between them that Day, nor will one ask after another!
Qarib: Those whose scales are heavy shall prosper,
Sarwar: If the side of ones good deeds weighs heavier on a scale, he will have everlasting happiness,

Shakir: The fire shall scorch their faces, and they therein shall be in severe affliction
Pickthall: The fire burneth their faces, and they are glum therein.
Yusufali: The Fire will burn their faces, and they will therein grin, with their lips displaced.

Sarwar: (They will be told), "Were Our revelations not recited to you and did you not call them lies?"
Shakir: Were not My communications recited to you? But you used to reject them
Pickthall: (It will be said): Were not My revelations recited unto you, and then ye used to deny them?
Yusufali: "Were not My Signs rehearsed to you, and ye did but treat them as falsehood?"

Shakir: O our Lord! Take us out of it; then if we return (to evil) surely we shall be unjust
Pickthall: Our Lord! Oh, bring us forth from hence! If we return (to evil) then indeed we shall be wrong-doers.
Yusufali: "Our Lord! bring us out of this: if ever we return (to Evil), then shall we be wrong-doers indeed!"

Shakir: Surely there was a party of My servants who said: O OUI . Lord! we believe, so do Thou forgive us and have mercy on us, and Thou art the best of the Merciful ones
Pickthall: Lo! there was a party of My slaves who said: Our Lord! We believe, therefor forgive us and have mercy on us for Thou art Best of all who show mercy;
Yusufali: "A part of My servants there was, who used to pray 'our Lord! we believe; then do Thou forgive us, and have mercy upon us: For Thou art the Best of those who show mercy!"

Qarib: But you took them for laughingstock, mocking at them, until they caused you to forget My remembrance.
Sarwar: "You mocked and laughed at them until you forgot all about Me.
Shakir: But you took them for a mockery until they made you forget My remembrance and you used to laugh at them
Pickthall: But ye chose them for a laughing-stock until they caused you to forget remembrance of Me, while ye laughed at them.
Yusufali: "But ye treated them with ridicule, so much so that (ridicule of) them made you forget My Message while ye were laughing at them!

Pickthall: Lo! I have rewarded them this day forasmuch as they were steadfast in that they, even they, are the triumphant.
Yusufali: "I have rewarded them this Day for their patience and constancy: they are indeed the ones that have achieved Bliss..."

Qarib: And He will ask: 'How many years did you live on earth? '
Sarwar: God will ask them, "How many years did you live in your graves?"
Shakir: He will say: How many years did you tarry in the earth?
Pickthall: He will say: How long tarried ye in the earth, counting by years?
Yusufali: He will say: "What number of years did ye stay on earth?"
Qarib: They will reply: 'A day, or part of a day; ask those who have kept count. '
Sarwar: They will reply. "We remained for about a day or part of it, but ask those who have kept count".
Shakir: They will say: We tarried a day or part of a day, but ask those who keep account
Pickthall: They will say: We tarried by a day or part of a day. Ask of those who keep count!
Yusufali: They will say: "We stayed a day or part of a day: but ask those who keep account."
Qarib: He will say: 'You have tarried a little, did you know?
Sarwar: God will say, "You have indeed remained there for a short time. Would that you knew it during your life time.

Pickthall: He will say: Ye tarried but a little if ye only knew.
Yusufali: He will say: "Ye stayed not but a little,- if ye had only known!

Qarib: Did you think that We had created you only for play, and that you would never be returned to Us? '
Sarwar: Did you think that We had created you for a playful purpose and that you were not to return to Us?"
Shakir: What! did you then think that We had created you in vain and that you shall not be returned to Us?
Pickthall: Deemed ye then that We had created you for naught, and that ye would not be returned unto Us?
Yusufali: "Did ye then think that We had created you in jest, and that ye would not be brought back to Us (for account)?"
Qarib: High Exalted be Allah, the King, the Truth. There is no god except He, the Lord of the Noble Throne.
Sarwar: God is the most exalted King and the Supreme Truth. He is the only God and the Lord of the Gracious Throne.
Shakir: So exalted be Allah, the True King; no god is there but He, the Lord of the honorable dominion
Pickthall: Now Allah be Exalted, the True King! There is no Allah save Him, the Lord of the Throne of Grace.
Yusufali: Therefore exalted be Allah, the King, the Reality: there is no god but He, the Lord of the Throne of Honour!
Qarib: Whosoever calls upon another god, other than Allah, having no proof his reckoning will be with his Lord. The unbelievers shall never prosper.
Sarwar: One who worships things besides God has no proof of the authority of such things. God is certainly keeping the record of his deeds. The unbelievers will not have everlasting happiness.
Shakir: And whoever invokes with Allah another god-- he has no proof of this-- his reckoning is only with his Lord; surely the unbelievers shall not be successful
Pickthall: He who crieth unto any other god along with Allah hath no proof thereof. His reckoning is only with his Lord. Lo! disbelievers will not be successful.
Yusufali: If anyone invokes, besides Allah, Any other god, he has no authority therefor; and his reckoning will be only with his Lord! and verily the Unbelievers will fail to win through!
