Qarib: till the certainty (death) overtook us. '
Sarwar: until death approached us". Shakir: Till death overtook us Pickthall: Till the Inevitable came unto us. Yusufali: "Until there came to us (the Hour) that is certain."
Qarib: The intercession of their intercessors shall not benefit them.
Sarwar: The intercession of the intercessors will be of no benefit to them. Shakir: So the intercession of intercessors shall not avail them Pickthall: The mediation of no mediators will avail them then. Yusufali: Then will no intercession of (any) intercessors profit them.
Qarib: What is the matter with them that they turn away from this Reminder,
Sarwar: If such will be the Day of Judgment, what is the matter with them? Why do they run away from guidance, Shakir: What is then the matter with them, that they turn away from the admonition Pickthall: Why now turn they away from the Admonishment, Yusufali: Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition?-
Qarib: like startled wild donkeys
Sarwar: like frightened donkeys Shakir: As if they were asses taking fright Pickthall: As they were frightened asses Yusufali: As if they were affrighted asses,
Qarib: fleeing before a lion?
Sarwar: running away from a lion? Shakir: That had fled from a lion? Pickthall: Fleeing from a lion? Yusufali: Fleeing from a lion!
Qarib: Indeed, each one of them desires to be given unrolled scrolls.
Sarwar: Is it that everyone of them wants to receive a heavenly book addressed to him personally? Shakir: Nay; every one of them desires that he may be given pages spread out; Pickthall: Nay, but everyone of them desireth that he should be given open pages (from Allah). Yusufali: Forsooth, each one of them wants to be given scrolls (of revelation) spread out!
Qarib: No, indeed they have no fear of the Everlasting Life.
Sarwar: This will certainly never be the case! In fact, they are not afraid of the Day of Judgment. Shakir: Nay! but they do not fear the hereafter Pickthall: Nay, verily. They fear not the Hereafter. Yusufali: By no means! But they fear not the Hereafter,
Qarib: No, indeed, surely, this is a Reminder.
Sarwar: There is no doubt that the Quran is a guide. Shakir: Nay! it is surely an admonition Pickthall: Nay, verily. Lo! this is an Admonishment. Yusufali: Nay, this surely is an admonition:
فَمَنْ شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ
﴿۵۵﴾
Qarib: So, whoever wills, will remember it.
Sarwar: Let anyone who seeks guidance do so. Shakir: So whoever pleases may mind it Pickthall: So whosoever will may heed. Yusufali: Let any who will, keep it in remembrance!
Qarib: But none will remember, unless Allah wills, He is the Owner of fear, the Owner of forgiveness.
Sarwar: No one will seek guidance unless God wills it. He alone is worthy of being feared and He is the Source of Forgiveness. Shakir: And they will not mind unless Allah please. He is worthy to be feared and worthy to forgive Pickthall: And they will not heed unless Allah willeth (it). He is the fount of fear. He is the fount of Mercy. Yusufali: But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He is the Lord of Righteousness, and the Lord of Forgiveness. |
