Qarib: AlifLaamMeem.
Sarwar: Alif. Lam. Mim.
Shakir: Alif Lam Mim
Pickthall: Alif. Lam. Mim.
Yusufali: A.L.M.
Qarib: Do people think that they are left alone by saying: 'We are believers, ' and will not be tried?
Sarwar: Do people think they will not be tested because they say, "We have faith?"
Shakir: Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, We believe, and not be tried?
Pickthall: Do men imagine that they will be left (at ease) because they say, We believe, and will not be tested with affliction?
Yusufali: Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, "We believe", and that they will not be tested?
Qarib: We tried those who have gone before them. Allah knows those who are truthful and those who lie.
Sarwar: We had certainly tried those who lived before them to make sure who were truthful in their faith and who were liars.
Shakir: And certainly We tried those before them, so Allah will certainly know those who are true and He will certainly know the liars
Pickthall: Lo! We tested those who were before you. Thus Allah knoweth those who are sincere, and knoweth those who feign.
Yusufali: We did test those before them, and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false.
Qarib: Or do the evildoers think that they will outstrip Us? How evil is their judgment!
Sarwar: Do the evil-doers think they can escape Us? How terrible is their judgment?
Shakir: Or do they who work evil think that they will escape Us? Evil is it that they judge!
Pickthall: Or do those who do ill-deeds imagine that they can outstrip Us? Evil (for them) is that which they decide.
Yusufali: Do those who practise evil think that they will get the better of Us? Evil is their judgment!
Qarib: He who hopes to meet Allah (must know) that the term of Allah is coming. He is the Hearer, the Knower.
Sarwar: Let those who have the desire to be in the presence of God on the Day of Judgment know that their day will certainly be coming. God is All-Hearing and All-Knowing.
Shakir: Whoever hopes to meet Allah, the term appointed by Allah will then most surely come; and He is the Hearing, the Knowing
Pickthall: Whoso looketh forward to the meeting with Allah (let him know that) Allah's reckoning is surely nigh, and He is the Hearer, the Knower.
Yusufali: For those whose hopes are in the meeting with Allah (in the Hereafter, let them strive); for the term (appointed) by Allah is surely coming and He hears and knows (all things).
Qarib: He who strives, strives for himself. Allah is the Rich, independent of the worlds.
Sarwar: Whoever strives hard should know that it is for his own good. God is independent of the whole world.
Shakir: And whoever strives hard, he strives only for his own soul; most surely Allah is Self-sufficient, above (need of) the worlds
Pickthall: And whosoever striveth, striveth only for himself, for lo! Allah is altogether Independent of (His) creatures.
Yusufali: And if any strive (with might and main), they do so for their own souls: for Allah is free of all needs from all creation.
Qarib: As for those who believe and do good works, We shall acquit them of their sins, and recompense them with the best for what they were doing.
Sarwar: We shall expiate the sins of the righteously striving believers and shall reward them better than their deeds.
Shakir: And (as for) those who believe and do good, We will most certainly do away with their evil deeds and We will most certainly reward them the best of what they did
Pickthall: And as for those who believe and do good works, We shall remit from them their evil deeds and shall repay them the best that they did.
Yusufali: Those who believe and work righteous deeds,- from them shall We blot out all evil (that may be) in them, and We shall reward them according to the best of their deeds.
Qarib: We have charged the human to be kind to his parents. But if they bid you to associate with Me that which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me you will return, and I shall inform you of all that you have done.
Sarwar: We have advised the human being, "Be kind to your parents. Do not obey them if they force you to consider equal to Me things which you do not know are such." You will all return (to Me) and I shall show all that you have done.
Shakir: And We have enjoined on man goodness to his parents, and if they contend with you that you should associate (others) with Me, of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them, to Me is your return, so I will inform you of what you did
Pickthall: We have enjoined on man kindness to parents; but if they strive to make thee join with Me that of which thou hast no knowledge, then obey them not. Unto Me is your return and I shall tell you what ye used to do.
Yusufali: We have enjoined on man kindness to parents: but if they (either of them) strive (to force) thee to join with Me (in worship) anything of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not. Ye have (all) to return to me, and I will tell you (the truth) of all that ye did.
Qarib: Those who believe and do good works shall be admitted among the righteous.
Sarwar: We shall admit the righteously striving believers into the company of the pious ones.
Shakir: And (as for) those who believe and do good, We will most surely cause them to enter among the good
Pickthall: And as for those who believe and do good works, We verily shall make them enter in among the righteous.
Yusufali: And those who believe and work righteous deeds,- them shall We admit to the company of the Righteous.
Qarib: There are some people who say: 'We believe in Allah, ' yet when such is hurt in the cause of Allah, he makes the persecution of people as though it were the punishment of Allah. But then if help comes from his Lord, he will say: 'We were with you. ' Does Allah not know what is in the (people's) chests of the worlds?
Sarwar: Some people say, "We have faith in God." But when they face some hardship for His cause, they begin to consider the persecution that they have experienced from people as a torment from God. When your Lord grants you a victory, they say, "We were with you." Does God not know best what is in the hearts of every creature?
Shakir: And among men is he who says: We believe in Allah; but when he is persecuted in (the way of) Allah he thinks the persecution of men to be as the chastisement of Allah; and if there come assistance from your Lord, they would most certainly say: Surely we were with you. What! is not Allah the best knower of what is in the breasts of mankind
Pickthall: Of mankind is he who saith: We believe in Allah, but, if he be made to suffer for the sake of Allah, he mistaketh the persecution of mankind for Allah's punishment; and then, if victory cometh from thy Lord, will say: Lo! we were with you (all the while). Is not Allah Best Aware of what is in the bosoms of (His) creatures?
Yusufali: Then there are among men such as say, "We believe in Allah"; but when they suffer affliction in (the cause of) Allah, they treat men's oppression as if it were the Wrath of Allah! And if help comes (to thee) from thy Lord, they are sure to say, "We have (always) been with you!" Does not Allah know best all that is in the hearts of all creation?
Qarib: Most certainly Allah knows the believers and the hypocrites.
Sarwar: God certainly knows all about the believers and the hypocrites.
Shakir: And most certainly Allah will know those who believe and most certainly He will know the hypocrites
Pickthall: Verily Allah knoweth those who believe, and verily He knoweth the hypocrites.
Yusufali: And Allah most certainly knows those who believe, and as certainly those who are Hypocrites.
Qarib: The unbelievers say to those who believe: 'Follow our path, and we will carry your sins. ' Yet they cannot carry even a thing of their sins. They are surely lying.
Sarwar: The unbelievers say to the believers. "Follow our way. We shall take the responsibility for your sins." They cannot take responsibility for any of the sins. They are only liars.
Shakir: And those who disbelieve say to those who believe: Follow our path and we will bear your wrongs. And never shall they be the bearers of any of their wrongs; most surely they are liars
Pickthall: Those who disbelieve say unto those who believe: Follow our way (of religion) and we verily will bear your sins (for you). They cannot bear aught of their sins. Lo! they verily are liars.
Yusufali: And the Unbelievers say to those who believe: "Follow our path, and we will bear (the consequences) of your faults." Never in the least will they bear their faults: in fact they are liars!
Qarib: They shall certainly carry their loads, and other loads besides their loads, and on the Day of Resurrection, they shall be questioned about what they forged.
Sarwar: Besides the other burdens that they will have to carry, they will certainly be loaded with the burden of their own sins. They will be questioned on the Day of Judgment about what they had falsely invented.
Shakir: And most certainly they shall carry their own burdens, and other burdens with their own burdens, and most certainly they shall be questioned on the resurrection day as to what they forged
Pickthall: But they verily will bear their own loads and other loads beside their own, and they verily will be questioned on the Day of Resurrection concerning that which they invented.
Yusufali: They will bear their own burdens, and (other) burdens along with their own, and on the Day of Judgments they will be called to account for their falsehoods.
Qarib: Indeed, We sent Noah to his nation, and he lived amongst them for a thousand years, less fifty (but they belied him), then the Flood seized them while they were harmdoers.
Sarwar: We sent Noah to his people and he lived with them for nine hundred and fifty years, then the flood engulfed them for their injustice.
Shakir: And certainly We sent Nuh to his people, so he remained among them a thousand years save fifty years. And the deluge overtook them, while they were unjust
Pickthall: And verily we sent Noah (as Our messenger) unto his folk, and he continued with them for a thousand years save fifty years; and the flood engulfed them, for they were wrong-doers.
Yusufali: We (once) sent Noah to his people, and he tarried among them a thousand years less fifty: but the Deluge overwhelmed them while they (persisted in) sin.
Qarib: But We saved him and all who were in the Ark, and made (the event) a sign to the worlds.
Sarwar: We saved Noah and the people in the Ark and made (their case) a miracle for the world.
Shakir: So We delivered him and the inmates of the ark, and made it a sign to the nations
Pickthall: And We rescued him and those with him in the ship, and made of it a portent for the peoples.
Yusufali: But We saved him and the companions of the Ark, and We made the (Ark) a Sign for all peoples!
Qarib: And (remember) Abraham. When he said to his people 'Worship Allah and fear Him. That would be best for you, if you but knew.
Sarwar: Abraham told his people, "Worship God and have fear of Him. It is better for you if only you knew it.
Shakir: And (We sent) Ibrahim, when he said to his people: Serve Allah and be careful of (your duty to) Him; this is best for you, if you did but know:
Pickthall: And Abraham! (Remember) when he said unto his folk: Serve Allah, and keep your duty unto Him; that is better for you if ye did but know.
Yusufali: And (We also saved) Abraham: behold, he said to his people, "Serve Allah and fear Him: that will be best for you- If ye understand!
Qarib: You only worship, other than Allah, idols and invent falsehoods. Those whom you worship, other than Allah, have no power to give you provision. Therefore seek the provision of Allah, and worship Him. Give thanks to Him, to Him you shall return. '
Sarwar: You worship idols besides God and you create falsehood. Whatever you worship besides Him cannot provide you with anything for your sustenance. Seek your sustenance from the bounties of God. Worship Him. Give Him thanks. To Him you will all return."
Shakir: You only worship idols besides Allah and you create a lie surely they whom you serve besides Allah do not control for you any sustenance, therefore seek the sustenance from Allah and serve Him and be grateful to Him; to Him you shall be brought back
Pickthall: Ye serve instead of Allah only idols, and ye only invent a lie. Lo! those whom ye serve instead of Allah own no provision for you. So seek your provision from Allah, and serve Him, and give thanks unto Him, (for) unto Him ye will be brought back.
Yusufali: "For ye do worship idols besides Allah, and ye invent falsehood. The things that ye worship besides Allah have no power to give you sustenance: then seek ye sustenance from Allah, serve Him, and be grateful to Him: to Him will be your return.
Qarib: If you belie me, other nations before you also belied. It is only for a Messenger to deliver the clear deliverance.
Sarwar: If you, (pagans), call our (revelations) lies, certainly many generations living before you have also done the same thing. The duty of a Messenger is only to preach clearly.
Shakir: And if you reject (the truth), nations before you did indeed reject (the truth); and nothing is incumbent on the messenger but a plain delivering (of the message)
Pickthall: But if ye deny, then nations have denied before you. The messenger is only to convey (the message) plainly.
Yusufali: "And if ye reject (the Message), so did generations before you: and the duty of the messenger is only to preach publicly (and clearly)."
Qarib: Do they not see how Allah originates the Creation, and then brings it back? That is an easy matter for Allah.
Sarwar: Have they not seen how God begins the creation and then turns it back? This is not difficult at all for God.
Shakir: What! do they not consider how Allah originates the creation, then reproduces it? Surely that is easy to Allah
Pickthall: See they not how Allah produceth creation, then reproduceth it? Lo! for Allah that is easy.
Yusufali: See they not how Allah originates creation, then repeats it: truly that is easy for Allah.
Qarib: Say: 'Travel in the land and see how He started the Creation. Then Allah will originate the Everlasting Life. Allah has power over all things.
Sarwar: (Muhammad), say to them, "Travel through the land and see how He has begun the creation and how He will invent the next life. God has power over all things.
Shakir: Say: Travel in the earth and see how He makes the first creation, then Allah creates the latter creation; surely Allah has power over all things
Pickthall: Say (O Muhammad): Travel in the land and see how He originated creation, then Allah bringeth forth the later growth. Lo! Allah is Able to do all things.
Yusufali: Say: "Travel through the earth and see how Allah did originate creation; so will Allah produce a later creation: for Allah has power over all things.
Qarib: He punishes whom He will and has mercy to whom He will. To Him you shall be turned.
Sarwar: He punishes or grants mercy to whomever He wants and to Him you will all return.
Shakir: He punishes whom He pleases and has mercy on whom He pleases, and to Him you shall be turned back
Pickthall: He punisheth whom He will and showeth mercy unto whom He will, and unto Him ye will be turned.
Yusufali: "He punishes whom He pleases, and He grants Mercy to whom He pleases, and towards Him are ye turned.
Qarib: You are not able to frustrate Him either in the earth or heaven, nor have you, other than Allah, a guardian or helper.
Sarwar: You cannot challenge God in the heavens or in the earth. No one besides God is your guardian or helper.
Shakir: And you shall not escape in the earth nor in the heaven, and you have neither a protector nor a helper besides Allah
Pickthall: Ye cannot escape (from Him) in the earth or in the sky, and beside Allah there is for you no friend or helper.
Yusufali: "Not on earth nor in heaven will ye be able (fleeing) to frustrate (his Plan), nor have ye, besides Allah, any protector or helper."
Qarib: Those who disbelieve the verses of Allah and the meeting with Him shall despair of My Mercy, for them there awaits a painful punishment.
Sarwar: Those who have rejected God's revelations have no hope in receiving His mercy. They will face a painful torment.
Shakir: And (as to) those who disbelieve in the communications of Allah and His meeting, they have despaired of My mercy, and these it is that shall have a painful punishment
Pickthall: Those who disbelieve in the revelations of Allah and in (their) Meeting with Him, such have no hope of My mercy. For such there is a painful doom.
Yusufali: Those who reject the Signs of Allah and the Meeting with Him (in the Hereafter),- it is they who shall despair of My Mercy: it is they who will (suffer) a most grievous Penalty.
Qarib: The only answer his nation gave was that they said: 'Kill him, or burn him! 'But Allah saved him from the fire. Surely, in this there are signs for a nation who believe.
Sarwar: (Abraham's) people had no answer except suggesting, "Kill him or burn him." But God saved him from the fire. In this there is evidence (of truth) for the believing people.
Shakir: So naught was the answer of his people except that they said: Slay him or burn him; then Allah delivered him from the fire; most surely there are signs in this for a people who believe
Pickthall: But the answer of his folk was only that they said: "Kill him" or "Burn him." Then Allah saved him from the Fire. Lo! herein verily are portents for folk who believe.
Yusufali: So naught was the answer of (Abraham's) people except that they said: "Slay him or burn him." But Allah did save him from the Fire. Verily in this are Signs for people who believe.
Qarib: He said: 'Other than Allah, you have taken to yourselves idols as an affection between yourselves in the present life. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you shall deny one another and curse one another, and your refuge will be the Fire, and none shall help you. '
Sarwar: Abraham said, "You believe in idols besides God only out of worldly love, but on the Day of Judgment you will reject and condemn each other. Your dwelling will be fire and no one will help you."
Shakir: And he said: You have only taken for yourselves idols besides Allah by way of friendship between you in this world's life, then on the resurrection day some of you shall deny others, and some of you shall curse others, and your abode is the fire, and you shall not have any helpers
Pickthall: He said: Ye have chosen only idols instead of Allah. The love between you is only in the life of the world. Then on the Day of Resurrection ye will deny each other and curse each other, and your abode will be the Fire, and ye will have no helpers.
Yusufali: And he said: "For you, ye have taken (for worship) idols besides Allah, out of mutual love and regard between yourselves in this life; but on the Day of Judgment ye shall disown each other and curse each other: and your abode will be the Fire, and ye shall have none to help."
Qarib: Lot believed him, and said: 'I will migrate to my Lord; He is the Almighty, the Wise. '
Sarwar: Only Lot believed in (Abraham) and said, "I seek refuge in my Lord, for He is Majestic and All-wise".
Shakir: And Lut believed in Him, and he said: I am fleeing to my Lord, surely He is the Mighty, the Wise
Pickthall: And Lot believed him, and said: Lo! I am a fugitive unto my Lord. Lo! He, only He, is the Mighty, the Wise.
Yusufali: But Lut had faith in Him: He said: "I will leave home for the sake of my Lord: for He is Exalted in Might, and Wise."
Qarib: And, We gave him (Abraham), Isaac and Jacob and appointed on his descendants the Prophethood and the Book. We gave him his wage in this world, and in the Everlasting Life he shall be among the righteous.
Sarwar: We granted Isaac and Jacob to Abraham and We bestowed upon his offspring, prophethood and the Book. We gave him his reward in this world and in the next life, he will be among the pious ones.
Shakir: And We granted him Ishaq and Yaqoub, and caused the t prophethood and the book to remain in his seed, and We gave him his reward in this world, and in the hereafter he will most surely be among the good
Pickthall: And We bestowed on him Isaac and Jacob, and We established the prophethood and the Scripture among his seed, and We gave him his reward in the world, and lo! in the Hereafter he verily is among the righteous.
Yusufali: And We gave (Abraham) Isaac and Jacob, and ordained among his progeny Prophethood and Revelation, and We granted him his reward in this life; and he was in the Hereafter (of the company) of the Righteous.
Qarib: And Lot who said to his nation: 'You commit indecency which no other being in all the world has committed before you.
Sarwar: Lot told his people, "You are certainly committing the kind of indecency which no one in the world has committed before".
Shakir: And (We sent) Lut when he said to his people: Most surely you are guilty of an indecency which none of the nations has ever done before you;
Pickthall: And Lot! (Remember) when he said unto his folk: Lo! ye commit lewdness such as no creature did before you.
Yusufali: And (remember) Lut: behold, he said to his people: "Ye do commit lewdness, such as no people in Creation (ever) committed before you.
Qarib: What, do you approach men and cause a detour on the road, and commit dishonor (sodomy) in your assembly? ' But the only reply of his nation was: 'Then bring down the punishment of Allah, if what you say is true. '
Sarwar: Do you engage in carnal relations with men, rob the travellers, and commit evil in your gatherings? His people had no answer but to say, "Bring upon us the torment of God if you are truthful".
Shakir: What! do you come to the males and commit robbery on the highway, and you commit evil deeds in your assemblies? But nothing was the answer of his people except that they said: Bring on us Allah's punishment, if you are one of the truthful
Pickthall: For come ye not in unto males, and cut ye not the road (for travellers), and commit ye not abomination in your meetings? But the answer of his folk was only that they said: Bring Allah's doom upon us if thou art a truthteller!
Yusufali: "Do ye indeed approach men, and cut off the highway?- and practise wickedness (even) in your councils?" But his people gave no answer but this: they said: "Bring us the Wrath of Allah if thou tellest the truth."

Qarib: 'My Lord, ' he said, 'help me against this corrupt nation. '
Sarwar: He prayed, "Lord help me against the evil-doing people."
Shakir: He said: My Lord! help me against the mischievous people
Pickthall: He said: My Lord! Give me victory over folk who work corruption.
Yusufali: He said: "O my Lord! help Thou me against people who do mischief!"

Qarib: And when Our Messengers brought Abraham the glad tidings they said: 'We are destroying the people of this village, because its people are harmdoers. '
Sarwar: When Our angelic Messengers brought glad news to Abraham, they told him, "We are about to destroy the people of this town for their injustice".
Shakir: And when Our messengers came to Ibrahim with the good news, they said: Surely we are going to destroy the people of this town, for its people are unjust
Pickthall: And when Our messengers brought Abraham the good news, they said: Lo! we are about to destroy the people of that township, for its people are wrong-doers.
Yusufali: When Our Messengers came to Abraham with the good news, they said: "We are indeed going to destroy the people of this township: for truly they are (addicted to) crime."

Sarwar: Abraham said, "Lot is there in that town!" They said, "We know everyone there. We shall certainly save him and his family except his wife who will remain behind."
Shakir: He said: Surely in it is Lut. They said: We know well who is in it; we shall certainly deliver him and his followers, except his wife; she shall be of those who remain behind
Pickthall: He said: Lo! Lot is there. They said: We are best aware of who is there. We are to deliver him and his household, all save his wife, who is of those who stay behind.
Yusufali: He said: "But there is Lut there." They said: "Well do we know who is there : we will certainly save him and his following,- except his wife: she is of those who lag behind!"

Qarib: And when Our Messengers came to Lot, he was troubled and distressed on their account. But they said: 'Have no fear, and do not be sad. Surely, we will save you and your family except your wife, she has become of those that shall remain behind. '
Sarwar: When Our angelic Messengers came to Lot, he was grieved and depressed to see them. They told him, "Do not be afraid or grieved. We will rescue you and your family except your wife who will remain behind.
Shakir: And when Our messengers came to Lut he was grieved on account of them, and he felt powerless (to protect) them; and they said: Fear not, nor grieve; surely we will deliver you and your followers, except your wife; she shall be of those who remain behind
Pickthall: And when Our messengers came unto Lot, he was troubled upon their account, for he could not protect them; but they said: Fear not, nor grieve! Lo! we are to deliver thee and thy household, (all) save thy wife, who is of those who stay behind.
Yusufali: And when Our Messengers came to Lut, he was grieved on their account, and felt himself powerless (to protect) them: but they said: "Fear thou not, nor grieve: we are (here) to save thee and thy following, except thy wife: she is of those who lag behind.

Qarib: We shall send down anger out of heaven upon the people of this city because they are debauchers.
Sarwar: We will bring torment from the sky on this town because of the evil-deeds of its inhabitants".
Shakir: Surely We will cause to come down upon the people of this town a punishment from heaven, because they transgressed
Pickthall: Lo! We are about to bring down upon the folk of this township a fury from the sky because they are evil-livers.
Yusufali: "For we are going to bring down on the people of this township a Punishment from heaven, because they have been wickedly rebellious."
Qarib: Indeed, We left a clear sign for a nation that understands.
Sarwar: We left manifest evidence (of the truth) there for the people of understanding.
Shakir: And certainly We have left a clear sign of it for a people who understand
Pickthall: And verily of that We have left a clear sign for people who have sense.
Yusufali: And We have left thereof an evident Sign, for any people who (care to) understand.
Qarib: And to Midian their brother Shu'aib. He said: 'Worship Allah, my nation. Look to the Last Day. Do not make mischief in the land, doing corrupt works.
Sarwar: We sent to the people of Midian their brother Shu`ayb. He told them, "Worship God. Have hope in the life to come. Do not spread evil in the land".
Shakir: And to Madyan (We sent) their brother Shuaib, so he said: O my people! serve Allah and fear the latter day and do not act corruptly in the land, making mischief
Pickthall: And unto Midian We sent Shu'eyb, their brother. He said: O my people! Serve Allah, and look forward to the Last Day, and do not evil, making mischief, in the earth.
Yusufali: To the Madyan (people) (We sent) their brother Shu'aib. Then he said: "O my people! serve Allah, and fear the Last Day: nor commit evil on the earth, with intent to do mischief."
Qarib: But they belied him, so the earthquake seized them, and when morning came, they were found fallen crouched in their dwellings, dead.
Sarwar: They rejected him so We jolted them with a violent earthquake and they were left motionless in their houses.
Shakir: But they rejected him, so a severe earthquake overtook them, and they became motionless bodies in their abode
Pickthall: But they denied him, and the dreadful earthquake took them, and morning found them prostrate in their dwelling place.
Yusufali: But they rejected him: Then the mighty Blast seized them, and they lay prostrate in their homes by the morning.
Qarib: Aad and Thamood, it has become clear to you from their dwellings; satan made their works seem fair to them and barred them from the Path, although they saw clearly.
Sarwar: How the people of Ad and Thamud were destroyed is evident to you from their homes. Satan made their deeds seem attractive to them and prevented them from the right path, even though they had visions.
Shakir: And (We destroyed) Ad and Samood, and from their dwellings (this) is apparent to you indeed; and the Shaitan made their deeds fair-seeming to them, so he kept them back from the path, though they were endowed with intelligence and skill,
Pickthall: And (the tribes of) A'ad and Thamud! (Their fate) is manifest unto you from their (ruined and deserted) dwellings. Satan made their deeds seem fair unto them and so debarred them from the Way, though they were keen observers.
Yusufali: (Remember also) the 'Ad and the Thamud (people): clearly will appear to you from (the traces) of their buildings (their fate): the Evil One made their deeds alluring to them, and kept them back from the Path, though they were gifted with intelligence and skill.

Qarib: And Korah, Pharaoh, and Haman Moses came to them with clear signs, but they became very insolent in the earth, yet they did not outstrip Us.
Sarwar: Korah, the Pharaoh, and Haman were also destroyed. Moses had brought them illustrious miracles, but they were puffed-up with pride in the land and they could not defeat Us.
Shakir: And (We destroyed) Qaroun and Firon and Haman; and certainly Musa came to them with clear arguments, but they behaved haughtily in the land; yet they could not outstrip (Us)
Pickthall: And Korah, Pharaoh and Haman! Moses came unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but they were boastful in the land. And they were not winners (in the race).
Yusufali: (Remember also) Qarun, Pharaoh, and Haman: there came to them Moses with Clear Signs, but they behaved with insolence on the earth; yet they could not overreach (Us).
Qarib: Each of them We seized for his sin. On some We loosed a squall of pebbles, and others were seized by the Cry. Some We caused to be swallowed up by the earth, and some We drowned. Allah would never wrong them but they wronged themselves.
Sarwar: We punished all of these people because of their sin. Some of them were struck by a violent sand-storm, some by a blast of sound, others were swallowed up by the earth, and some were drowned (in the sea). God did not do injustice to them, but they had wronged themselves.
Shakir: So each We punished for his sin; of them was he on whom We sent down a violent storm, and of them was he whom the rumbling overtook, and of them was he whom We made to be swallowed up by the earth, and of them was he whom We drowned; and it did not beseem Allah that He should be unjust to them, but they were unjust to their own souls
Pickthall: So We took each one in his sin; of them was he on whom We sent a hurricane, and of them was he who was overtaken by the (Awful) Cry, and of them was he whom We caused the earth to swallow, and of them was he whom We drowned. It was not for Allah to wrong them, but they wronged themselves.
Yusufali: Each one of them We seized for his crime: of them, against some We sent a violent tornado (with showers of stones); some were caught by a (mighty) Blast; some We caused the earth to swallow up; and some We drowned (in the waters): It was not Allah Who injured (or oppressed) them:" They injured (and oppressed) their own souls.
Qarib: The likeness of those who have taken guardians, other than Allah, is as the likeness of the spider that takes to itself a house; surely the spider's house is the weakest house if they but knew.
Sarwar: The belief of considering other things as one's guardians besides God is as feeble as a spider's web. The spider's web is the frailest of all dwellings, if only they knew it.
Shakir: The parable of those who take guardians besides Allah is as the parable of the spider that makes for itself a house; and most surely the frailest of the houses is the spider's house did they but know
Pickthall: The likeness of those who choose other patrons than Allah is as the likeness of the spider when she taketh unto herself a house, and lo! the frailest of all houses is the spider's house, if they but knew.
Yusufali: The parable of those who take protectors other than Allah is that of the spider, who builds (to itself) a house; but truly the flimsiest of houses is the spider's house;- if they but knew.
Qarib: Allah knows whatever they call upon other than Him; He is the Almighty, the Wise.
Sarwar: God knows whatever they worship besides Him; He is the Majestic and All-wise.
Shakir: Surely Allah knows whatever thing they call upon besides Him; and He is the Mighty, the Wise
Pickthall: Lo! Allah knoweth what thing they invoke instead of Him. He is the Mighty, the Wise.
Yusufali: Verily Allah doth know of (every thing) whatever that they call upon besides Him: and He is Exalted (in power), Wise.

Qarib: And We strike these parables for the people, but none understands except the knowledgeable.
Sarwar: These are parables which We tell to human being, but only the learned ones understand them.
Shakir: And (as for) these examples, We set them forth for men, and none understand them but the learned
Pickthall: As for these similitudes, We coin them for mankind, but none will grasp their meaning save the wise.
Yusufali: And such are the Parables We set forth for mankind, but only those understand them who have knowledge.
Qarib: Allah has created the heavens and the earth with the truth. Surely, in that there is a sign for believers.
Sarwar: God has created the heavens and the earth for a genuine purpose. In this there is evidence (of the truth) for the believers.
Shakir: Allah created the heavens and the earth with truth; most surely there is a sign in this for the believers
Pickthall: Allah created the heavens and the earth with truth. Lo! therein is indeed a portent for believers.
Yusufali: Allah created the heavens and the earth in true (proportions): verily in that is a Sign for those who believe.
Qarib: Recite what has been sent down to you of the Book, and establish the prayer. Prayer forbids indecency and dishonor. The remembrance of Allah is greater, and Allah knows what you do.
Sarwar: (Muhammad), recite to them what has been revealed to you in the Book and be steadfast in prayer; prayer keeps one away from indecency and evil. It is the greatest act of worshipping God. God knows what you do.
Shakir: Recite that which has been revealed to you of the Book and keep up prayer; surely prayer keeps (one) away from indecency and evil, and certainly the remembrance of Allah is the greatest, and Allah knows what you do
Pickthall: Recite that which hath been inspired in thee of the Scripture, and establish worship. Lo! worship preserveth from lewdness and iniquity, but verily remembrance of Allah is more important. And Allah knoweth what ye do.
Yusufali: Recite what is sent of the Book by inspiration to thee, and establish regular Prayer: for Prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds; and remembrance of Allah is the greatest (thing in life) without doubt. And Allah knows the (deeds) that ye do.
Qarib: And do not dispute with the People of the Book (Nazarenes) except in the best manner, except for those among them who do wrong and say (to them): 'We believe in that which was sent down to us and that which was sent down to you. Our God and your God is One, and to Him we have surrendered. '
Sarwar: Do not argue with the People of the Book except only by the best manner, except the unjust among them. Tell them, "We believe in what is revealed to us and to you. Our Lord and your Lord is one. We have submitted ourselves to His will".
Shakir: And do not dispute with the followers of the Book except by what is best, except those of them who act unjustly, and say: We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you, and our Allah and your Allah is One, and to Him do we submit
Pickthall: And argue not with the People of the Scripture unless it be in (a way) that is better, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you; our Allah and your Allah is One, and unto Him we surrender.
Yusufali: And dispute ye not with the People of the Book, except with means better (than mere disputation), unless it be with those of them who inflict wrong (and injury): but say, "We believe in the revelation which has come down to us and in that which came down to you; Our Allah and your Allah is one; and it is to Him we bow (in Islam)."
Qarib: As such, We have sent down to you the Book. Those to whom We gave the Book believe in it, and so do some of these. None reject Our verses except the unbelievers.
Sarwar: We have revealed the Book to you. Some of the People of the Book and some of the pagans also believe in it. No one rejects Our revelations except the infidels.
Shakir: And thus have We revealed the Book to you. So those whom We have given the Book believe in it, and of these there are those who believe in it, and none deny Our communications except the unbelievers
Pickthall: In like manner We have revealed unto thee the Scripture, and those unto whom We gave the Scripture aforetime will believe therein; and of these (also) there are some who believe therein. And none deny Our revelations save the disbelievers.
Yusufali: And thus (it is) that We have sent down the Book to thee. So the People of the Book believe therein, as also do some of these (pagan Arabs): and none but Unbelievers reject our signs.
Qarib: Never before did you recited any Book, or inscribe it with your right hand. If you had done so, those who follow falsehood would have doubted.
Sarwar: You were not able to read or write before the Quran was revealed to you; otherwise, the followers of falsehood would have tried to confuse the matter.
Shakir: And you did not recite before it any book, nor did you transcribe one with your right hand, for then could those who say untrue things have doubted
Pickthall: And thou (O Muhammad) wast not a reader of any scripture before it, nor didst thou write it with thy right hand, for then might those have doubted, who follow falsehood.
Yusufali: And thou wast not (able) to recite a Book before this (Book came), nor art thou (able) to transcribe it with thy right hand: In that case, indeed, would the talkers of vanities have doubted.
Qarib: No, rather they are clear verses in the chests of those who have been given knowledge. None disbelieves Our verses except the harmdoers.
Sarwar: In fact, the Quran consists of illustrious verses that exist in the hearts of those who have knowledge. No one rejects Our revelations except the unjust ones.
Shakir: Nay! these are clear communications in the breasts of those who are granted knowledge; and none deny Our communications except the unjust
Pickthall: But it is clear revelations in the hearts of those who have been given knowledge, and none deny Our revelations save wrong-doers.
Yusufali: Nay, here are Signs self-evident in the hearts of those endowed with knowledge: and none but the unjust reject Our Signs.
Qarib: They ask: 'Why has not a sign been sent down upon him from his Lord? ' Say: 'The signs are only with Allah. I am only a clear warner. '
Sarwar: They say, "Why a miracle is not sent to him from his Lord." Say, "Miracles are in the hands of God. I am simply a warner."
Shakir: And they say: Why are not signs sent down upon him from his Lord? Say: The signs are only with Allah, and I am only a plain warner
Pickthall: And they say: Why are not portents sent down upon him from his Lord? Say: Portents are with Allah only, and I am but a plain warner.
Yusufali: Ye they say: "Why are not Signs sent down to him from his Lord?" Say: "The signs are indeed with Allah: and I am indeed a clear Warner."
Qarib: Is it not enough for them that We have sent down to you the Book that is recited to them? Surely, in this there is a mercy and a reminder to a nation who believe.
Sarwar: Is it not enough for them that We have revealed the Book to you to be recited to them. It is a mercy and a reminder for the believers.
Shakir: Is it not enough for them that We have revealed to you the Book which is recited to them? Most surely there is mercy in this and a reminder for a people who believe
Pickthall: Is it not enough for them that We have sent down unto thee the Scripture which is read unto them? Lo! herein verily is mercy, and a reminder for folk who believe.
Yusufali: And is it not enough for them that we have sent down to thee the Book which is rehearsed to them? Verily, in it is Mercy and a Reminder to those who believe.
Qarib: Say: 'Allah suffices as a witness between me and you. He knows whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth. Those who believe in falsehood and disbelieve in Allah those are they who are the losers. '
Sarwar: Say, "God is sufficient as a witness between me and you. He knows all that is in the heavens and the earth." Those who have faith in falsehood and disbelieve in God are certainly lost.
Shakir: Say: Allah is sufficient as a witness between me and you; He knows what is in the heavens and the earth. And (as for) those who believe in the falsehood and disbelieve in Allah, these it is that are the losers
Pickthall: Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Allah sufficeth for witness between me and you. He knoweth whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth. And those who believe in vanity and disbelieve in Allah, they it is who are the losers.
Yusufali: Say: "Enough is Allah for a witness between me and you: He knows what is in the heavens and on earth. And it is those who believe in vanities and reject Allah, that will perish (in the end).
Qarib: They demand that you hasten the punishment! But had it not been for the stated term, the punishment would come to them; it will come upon them suddenly when they are unaware.
Sarwar: They demand you to bring upon them torment immediately. Had not the time been fixed, the torment would certainly have approached them. It would have come to them suddenly and they would not have even realized how it came.
Shakir: And they ask you to hasten on the chastisement; and had not a term been appointed, the chastisement would certainly have come to them; and most certainly it will come to them all of a sudden while they will not perceive
Pickthall: They bid thee hasten on the doom (of Allah). And if a term had not been appointed, the doom would assuredly have come unto them (ere now). And verily it will come upon them suddenly when they perceive not.
Yusufali: They ask thee to hasten on the Punishment (for them): had it not been for a term (of respite) appointed, the Punishment would certainly have come to them: and it will certainly reach them,- of a sudden, while they perceive not!
Qarib: They demand that you hasten on the punishment! Gehenna (Hell) will encompass the unbelievers.
Sarwar: They demand you to bring upon them the torment immediately. Hell will certainly engulf the unbelievers.
Shakir: They ask you to hasten on the chastisement, and most surely hell encompasses the unbelievers;
Pickthall: They bid thee hasten on the doom, when lo! hell verily will encompass the disbelievers
Yusufali: They ask thee to hasten on the Punishment: but, of a surety, Hell will encompass the Rejecters of Faith!-
Qarib: On the Day the punishment shall cover them from above them and from beneath their feet, He shall say: 'Taste now what you were doing! '
Sarwar: They will be told on the Day of Judgment, when the torment will surround them from all sides, "Suffer the consequences of your deeds."
Shakir: On the day when the chastisement shall cover them from above them, and from beneath their feet; and He shall say: Taste what you did
Pickthall: On the day when the doom will overwhelm them from above them and from underneath their feet, and He will say: Taste what ye used to do!
Yusufali: On the Day that the Punishment shall cover them from above them and from below them, and (a Voice) shall say: "Taste ye (the fruits) of your deeds!"

Qarib: O My worshipers who believe, My earth is vast, therefore worship Me!

Pickthall: O my bondmen who believe! Lo! My earth is spacious. Therefor serve Me only.
Yusufali: O My servants who believe! truly, spacious is My Earth: therefore serve ye Me - (and Me alone)!

Sarwar: Every soul will experience the agony of death and to Me you will all return.
Shakir: Every soul must taste of death, then to Us you shall be brought back
Pickthall: Every soul will taste of death. Then unto Us ye will be returned.
Yusufali: Every soul shall have a taste of death in the end to Us shall ye be brought back.
Qarib: Those who believe and do good deeds We shall lodge them in the rooms of Paradise underneath which rivers flow, therein living for ever, an excellent wage for those who labor,
Sarwar: We shall give mansions in Paradise wherein streams flow to the righteously striving believers and therein they will live forever. How blessed is the reward of the hard working people
Shakir: And (as for) those who believe and do good, We will certainly give them abode in the high places in gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein; how good the reward of the workers:
Pickthall: Those who believe and do good works, them verily We shall house in lofty dwellings of the Garden underneath which rivers flow. There they will dwell secure. How sweet the guerdon of the toilers,
Yusufali: But those who believe and work deeds of righteousness - to them shall We give a Home in Heaven,- lofty mansions beneath which flow rivers,- to dwell therein for aye;- an excellent reward for those who do (good)!-

Pickthall: Who persevere, and put their trust in their Lord!
Yusufali: Those who persevere in patience, and put their trust, in their Lord and Cherisher.

Shakir: And how many a living creature that does not carry its sustenance: Allah sustains it and yourselves; and He is the Hearing, the Knowing
Pickthall: And how many an animal there is that beareth not its own provision! Allah provideth for it and for you. He is the Hearer, the Knower.
Yusufali: How many are the creatures that carry not their own sustenance? It is Allah who feeds (both) them and you: for He hears and knows (all things).
Qarib: If you ask them: 'Who has created the heavens and the earth and subjected the sun and the moon? ' They will say: 'Allah. ' How perverted they are!
Sarwar: If you ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth and has subdued the sun and moon?" They will say, "God has done it." So why are they wandering about!?
Shakir: And if you ask them, Who created the heavens and the earth and made the sun and the moon subservient, they will certainly say, Allah. Whence are they then turned away?
Pickthall: And if thou wert to ask them: Who created the heavens and the earth, and constrained the sun and the moon (to their appointed work)? they would say: Allah. How then are they turned away?
Yusufali: If indeed thou ask them who has created the heavens and the earth and subjected the sun and the moon (to his Law), they will certainly reply, "Allah". How are they then deluded away (from the truth)?

Yusufali: Allah enlarges the sustenance (which He gives) to whichever of His servants He pleases; and He (similarly) grants by (strict) measure, (as He pleases): for Allah has full knowledge of all things.
Qarib: If you were to ask them: ''Who sends down water out of the sky and thereby revives the earth after it was dead, ' they will reply: 'Allah. ' Say: 'Praise, belongs to Allah! ' No, but most of them do not understand.
Sarwar: If you ask them, "Who has sent down water from the sky to revive the dead earth?" They will say, "God has done it." Say, "It is only God who deserves all praise, but many of them do not understand."
Shakir: And if you ask them Who is it that sends down water from the clouds, then gives life to the earth with it after its death, they will certainly say, Allah. Say: All praise is due to Allah. Nay, most of them do not understand
Pickthall: And if thou wert to ask them: Who causeth water to come down from the sky, and therewith reviveth the earth after its death? they verily would say: Allah. Say: Praise be to Allah! But most of them have no sense.
Yusufali: And if indeed thou ask them who it is that sends down rain from the sky, and gives life therewith to the earth after its death, they will certainly reply, "Allah!" Say, "Praise be to Allah!" But most of them understand not.
Qarib: The life of this world is nothing but a diversion and play. Indeed, the Everlasting Residence is the Eternal Life, if they but knew.
Sarwar: The worldly life is not more than a childish game. It is the life hereafter which will be the real life, if only they knew it.
Shakir: And this life of the world is nothing but a sport and a play; and as for the next abode, that most surely is the life-- did they but know!
Pickthall: This life of the world is but a pastime and a game. Lo! the home of the Hereafter - that is Life, if they but knew.
Yusufali: What is the life of this world but amusement and play? but verily the Home in the Hereafter,- that is life indeed, if they but knew.
Qarib: When they embark upon ships, they call to Allah making their religion sincerely His; but when He brings them safe to the land, they associate others with Him
Sarwar: When they sail in a boat, they sincerely pray to God with pure faith. But when We bring them safely to land, they start considering things equal to God.
Shakir: So when they ride in the ships they call upon Allah, being sincerely obedient to Him, but when He brings them safe to the land, lo! they associate others (with Him);
Pickthall: And when they mount upon the ships they pray to Allah, making their faith pure for Him only, but when He bringeth them safe to land, behold! they ascribe partners (unto Him),
Yusufali: Now, if they embark on a boat, they call on Allah, making their devotion sincerely (and exclusively) to Him; but when He has delivered them safely to (dry) land, behold, they give a share (of their worship to others)!-
Qarib: showing ingratitude for what We have given them and take their enjoyment; soon they shall know!
Sarwar: Let them be ungrateful to what We have granted them. Let them enjoy themselves, but they will soon know (the consequences of their deeds).
Shakir: Thus they become ungrateful for what We have given them, so that they may enjoy; but they shall soon know
Pickthall: That they may disbelieve in that which We have given them, and that they may take their ease. But they will come to know.
Yusufali: Disdaining ungratefully Our gifts, and giving themselves up to (worldly) enjoyment! But soon will they know.
Qarib: Do they not see how We appointed a safe Sanctuary while all around them people are snatched away? Would they believe in falsehood and do they disbelieve in the favor of Allah!
Sarwar: Have the (pagans) not seen that We have made the holy precinct a safe place while all the people around are suffering terror. Do they believe in falsehood and disbelieve in God's bounties?
Shakir: Do they not see that We have made a sacred territory secure, while men are carried off by force from around them? Will they still believe in the falsehood and disbelieve in the favour of Allah?
Pickthall: Have they not seen that We have appointed a sanctuary immune (from violence), while mankind are ravaged all around them? Do they then believe in falsehood and disbelieve in the bounty of Allah?
Yusufali: Do they not then see that We have made a sanctuary secure, and that men are being snatched away from all around them? Then, do they believe in that which is vain, and reject the Grace of Allah?
Qarib: And who does greater evil that he who forges a lie against Allah or belied the truth when it comes to him! Is there not a lodging in Gehenna for the unbelievers?
Sarwar: Who is more unjust than one who invents falsehood against God or rejects the Truth after it has come to him? Is not hell the dwelling for the disbelievers.
Shakir: And who is more unjust than one who forges a lie against Allah, or gives the lie to the truth when it has come to him? Will not in hell be the abode of the unbelievers?
Pickthall: Who doeth greater wrong than he who inventeth a lie concerning Allah, or denieth the truth when it cometh unto him? Is not there a home in hell for disbelievers?
Yusufali: And who does more wrong than he who invents a lie against Allah or rejects the Truth when it reaches him? Is there not a home in Hell for those who reject Faith?
Qarib: Those who struggle in Our cause, We will surely guide them to Our ways; and Allah is with those who do good.
Sarwar: We shall certainly guide those who strive for Our cause to Our path. God is certainly with the righteous ones.
Shakir: And (as for) those who strive hard for Us, We will most certainly guide them in Our ways; and Allah is most surely with the doers of good
Pickthall: As for those who strive in Us, We surely guide them to Our paths, and lo! Allah is with the good.
Yusufali: And those who strive in Our (cause),- We will certainly guide them to our Paths: For verily Allah is with those who do right.
