﴿۴﴾
Qarib: saying: 'O my Lord, my bones are enfeebled, and my head glows silver with age. Yet, never Lord, have I been unblessed in prayer to You.
Sarwar: and said, "My Lord, my bones have become feeble and my hair has turned white with age. Yet I have never been deprived in receiving from You the answer to my prayers. Shakir: He said: My Lord! surely my bones are weakened and my head flares with hoariness, and, my Lord! I have never been unsuccessful in my prayer to Thee: Pickthall: Saying: My Lord! Lo! the bones of me wax feeble and my head is shining with grey hair, and I have never been unblest in prayer to Thee, my Lord. Yusufali: Praying: "O my Lord! infirm indeed are my bones, and the hair of my head doth glisten with grey: but never am I unblest, O my Lord, in my prayer to Thee!
﴿۵﴾
Qarib: Indeed, I fear my kinsmen who will succeed me, for my wife is barren. Grant me a kinsman
Sarwar: I am afraid of what my kinsmen will do after (my death) and my wife is barren. Lord, grant me a son Shakir: And surely I fear my cousins after me, and my wife is barren, therefore grant me from Thyself an heir, Pickthall: Lo! I fear my kinsfolk after me, since my wife is barren. Oh, give me from Thy presence a successor Yusufali: "Now I fear (what) my relatives (and colleagues) (will do) after me: but my wife is barren: so give me an heir as from Thyself,-

Qarib: who will be my heir and an heir to the House of Jacob, and make him, my Lord, satisfied. '
Sarwar: who will be my heir and the heir of the family of Jacob. Lord, make him a person who will please you". Shakir: Who should inherit me and inherit from the children of Yaqoub, and make him, my Lord, one in whom Thou art well pleased Pickthall: Who shall inherit of me and inherit (also) of the house of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, acceptable (unto Thee). Yusufali: "(One that) will (truly) represent me, and represent the posterity of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord! one with whom Thou art well-pleased!"
﴿۷﴾
Qarib: 'O Zachariah, We give you good tidings of a son, and he shall be called John (Yahya); a name We have never given before. '
Sarwar: We answered his prayers with the glad news of the birth of a son by the name of John and told him, "We have never given such a name to anyone else." Shakir: O Zakariya! surely We give you good news of a boy whose name shall be Yahya: We have not made before anyone his equal Pickthall: (It was said unto him): O Zachariah! Lo! We bring thee tidings of a son whose name is John; we have given the same name to none before (him). Yusufali: (His prayer was answered): "O Zakariya! We give thee good news of a son: His name shall be Yahya: on none by that name have We conferred distinction before."
﴿۸﴾
Qarib: 'How shall I have a son, Lord, ' he asked, 'when my wife is barren, and I am advanced in years? '
Sarwar: He said, "Lord, how can I have a son? My wife is barren and I have reached an extremely old age". Shakir: He said: O my Lord! when shall I have a son, and my wife is barren, and I myself have reached indeed the extreme degree of old age? Pickthall: He said: My Lord! How can I have a son when my wife is barren and I have reached infirm old age? Yusufali: He said: "O my Lord! How shall I have a son, when my wife is barren and I have grown quite decrepit from old age?"
﴿۹﴾
Qarib: He replied: 'It shall be so; your Lord says: "It is easy for Me, indeed, I created you before time when you were not a thing."
Sarwar: (The angel) said, "This is true, but your Lord says, 'For Me it is easy; I created you when you did not exist". Shakir: He said: So shall it be, your Lord says: It is easy to Me, and indeed I created you before, when you were nothing Pickthall: He said: So (it will be). Thy Lord saith: It is easy for Me, even as I created thee before, when thou wast naught. Yusufali: He said: "So (it will be) thy Lord saith, 'that is easy for Me: I did indeed create thee before, when thou hadst been nothing!'"
Qarib: He (Zachariah) said: 'Lord, make for me a sign. ' He replied: 'Your sign is that you shall not speak to people for three nights being without fault. '
Sarwar: Zachariah asked, " Lord, show me evidence (if this is a heavenly news)." The Lord said, "The evidence for it is that you must not speak (to any mortal) though you are in good health for three nights (and days)." Shakir: He said: My Lord! give me a sign. He said: Your sign is that you will not be able to speak to the people three nights while in sound health Pickthall: He said: My Lord! Appoint for me some token. He said: Thy token is that thou, with no bodily defect, shalt not speak unto mankind three nights. Yusufali: (Zakariya) said: "O my Lord! give me a Sign." "Thy Sign," was the answer, "Shall be that thou shalt speak to no man for three nights, although thou art not dumb." |
